Repatriation from the Maldives to Moldova
The Maldives is an island state, and its local rules have one important feature: cremation is not permitted. We help you prepare the documents and the transport of the body to Moldova.
- Issuing authority and document
- The Maldives is not a party to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (public list, checked 13.10.2026), so Maldivian rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. According to the UK government guidance (updated 24.09.2026), the local authorities issue a death certificate and a police report. The mortuary passport is issued by a Moldovan embassy or consulate; which mission serves the Maldives we could not confirm from the sources consulted, so we check it before the documents are submitted.
- Transport
- The Maldives is an island state, so the body travels by air. We do not assume a direct flight to Chișinău (RMO), because we found no source confirming one; if the death occurred on a remote island, internal transport may be needed, and the guidance we consulted does not describe how it is done.
- Timing
- We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. It depends on the issue of the certificate and the police report, on the preparation of the body, on transport from the island where the death occurred and on the flight connections; the UK guidance gives no timeframes for these steps.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.
Procedure
According to the UK government guidance (24.09.2026, written for British families), the local authorities issue a death certificate and a police report. If the deceased had an infectious condition such as hepatitis or HIV, the authorities must be told.
The guidance says the Maldives does not conduct post-mortem examinations, and that mortuary facilities exist in Malé, Hulhumalé and some regional centres. A relative or an authorised representative instructs a local or international funeral director. Since the guidance is written for British families, we confirm the steps for the Moldovan side with the embassy.
Required documents
Usually needed: the Maldivian death certificate, the police report, the identity document of the deceased and the documents of the person applying. If the certificate is not in English, the UK guidance says an official translation is needed. The guidance says nothing about embalming, so we check that requirement with the carrier and the embassy.
The Maldives does not appear in the table of the 1961 Hague Convention (HCCH, checked 13.10.2026), so an apostille cannot be assumed. How Maldivian documents are legalised for Moldova we confirm with the Moldovan mission. The "Letter of No Objection" that the guidance requires for the repatriation company comes from the British mission; we found no equivalent document for Moldova and do not assume one.
Specifics of the Maldives
The UK guidance is explicit: "Maldives does not permit cremations". So for the Maldives we do not plan a local cremation; if the family wants an urn, cremation can only take place after arrival in another country, and that country's rules are checked separately.
The country is made of islands, so the place of death matters: the guidance mentions mortuaries in Malé, Hulhumalé and regional centres but does not describe transport between islands. Please tell us at the outset where exactly the death occurred.
Frequently asked questions
Can cremation take place in the Maldives?
No. The UK government guidance (24.09.2026) says the Maldives does not permit cremations. If the family wants an urn, cremation takes place after the body is transported to another country.
Is a post-mortem carried out in the Maldives?
According to the UK guidance, the Maldives does not conduct post-mortem examinations. The guidance mentions that police, medical or post-mortem reports requested by a UK coroner through the FCDO can take months; we have no such rule for Moldova and do not assume one.
What if the death occurred on a small island?
Tell us the exact place. The guidance we consulted does not describe transport between islands, so we clarify it with the local funeral director and promise no route until it is confirmed.
What is the "Letter of No Objection" in the UK guidance?
It is a document the repatriation company requests from the British mission, for British citizens. For Moldovan cases we found no equivalent document and do not assume one; the real requirements we confirm with the embassy.
