Repatriation from Azerbaijan to Moldova
In Azerbaijan an autopsy is normally carried out on foreign nationals before the body is released, and without the death certificate neither burial nor repatriation can take place. We help you take the procedure in order.
- Issuing authority and document
- Azerbaijan is not listed among the parties to the Strasbourg Agreement (1973) on the Transfer of Corpses (Dutch treaty database, checked 13.10.2026), so Azerbaijani rules apply together with the requirements of the Republic of Moldova. The death is registered at the district Registration Department or at an ASAN centre. The Embassy of the Republic of Moldova operates in Baku and its website has a consular-services section.
- Transport
- From Azerbaijan the remains travel by air. Airport and airline reports confirm that direct passenger flights Chișinău–Baku began on 16 July 2026; the flight days differ between sources, and whether remains can be carried on them we check separately.
- Timing
- We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. The body stays in the mortuary until after the autopsy, and without the death certificate neither burial nor repatriation is possible; the rest depends on the removal permit, the embassy and the flight.
- Price
- Body (repatriation of remains): from 2 800 €
Ashes (urn): from 800 €
Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.
Procedure
According to UK guidance (published 24 February 2026, checked 13 October 2026), the death is registered at the district Registration Department or at ASAN, and a funeral director can do this for the family. An autopsy is always carried out on foreign nationals, usually within 24 hours; the results go to the police and can take several days, and the body stays in the mortuary until after the autopsy.
For repatriation, the same source lists the local death certificate, the coroner's permission to remove the body, the deceased's passport and the flight arrangements. Coffin and embalming requirements do not appear in the source, so we do not present them as facts and check them at the start.
Documents and their recognition
The Moldovan Foreign Ministry's list on recognition of documents (updated 2 February 2017) places Azerbaijan among the countries whose documents are recognised without legalization and without an apostille, under the 2004 bilateral treaty (in force since 12 February 2005) and the 1993 Minsk Convention. Azerbaijan is also a party to the Hague Convention since 2 March 2005. The list is old, so we confirm with the embassy whether an Azerbaijani document is accepted in that form.
The mortuary passport is issued by Moldovan embassies and consulates; the Ministry's page on death does not list the documents for it, and the Baku embassy's website does not mention death, so we find out the concrete requirements directly.
Cremation
UK guidance says cremation is not practised in Azerbaijan and ashes cannot be obtained locally. If the family still wants ashes, we discuss cremation outside the country separately; the usual option is transport of the body.
