Repatriation from Laos to Moldova

Laos is a landlocked country in Southeast Asia, far from Moldova. The UK guide says there are no international funeral directors in Laos and that repatriation is coordinated through Bangkok. We help you take the steps in order.

Issuing authority and document
Laos is not listed among the parties to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973), in the public list we consulted on 13.10.2026, so Lao rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. According to the UK government guide (published 20.05.2026), the death is registered at the district office of Home Affairs or the District People's Committee where the deceased last lived, usually with a funeral director's help, with an identity document and a hospital or police certificate. The mortuary passport is issued by an embassy or consulate of the Republic of Moldova; the list of missions on mfa.gov.md does not include Laos, so we check the competent mission before any documents are filed.
Transport
Laos has no sea coast, so the transport is by air. The UK guide says a standard Lao cremation may not be considered safe by airlines and that repatriation is coordinated by funeral directors in Bangkok, Thailand. We do not assume a direct flight to Chișinău (RMO), because we found no source confirming one; the route is agreed with the family once the documents are in hand.
Timing
We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. The UK guide says the death certificate is normally issued within a day or two of registration and local repatriation formalities usually take 8 to 10 working days. The hospital may require its bills to be paid before releasing the body, and mortuaries in Laos have limited capacity, so even these figures are not promises.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

The procedure

According to the UK guide (20.05.2026, written for British families), the death is registered at the district where the deceased last lived; the certificate is issued in Lao. Translation is easier to get in Vientiane than in rural areas, and the cause of death is often stated in basic terms.

To release the body for cremation or repatriation the guide names a Letter of Release, which can be issued by an embassy, a funeral director or another authorised representative, on the family's written confirmation of who is organising the funeral. Because the guide is written for British families, we confirm the steps for the Moldovan side with the Moldovan mission.

Documents required

For repatriating a body the UK guide lists the death certificate, the coroner's permission to remove the body, the deceased's passport and a repatriation letter from the embassy, noting the list is not exhaustive and may vary by province or cause of death. For remains it also mentions the local civil registry death certificate, a certificate of embalming and a certificate permitting transfer. The list for Moldova is set with the mission.

Laos is not in the table of the 1961 Hague Convention (HCCH, consulted on 13.10.2026), so an apostille cannot be assumed. How Lao documents are legalised for Moldova we settle with the Moldovan mission before sending anything.

Specifics in Laos

The guide says cremation is the cultural norm and takes place at a Wat (temple); Vientiane has basic enclosed facilities, elsewhere open-air pyres may be used. The urn may contain bone fragments. Basic embalming can be done at local mortuaries, but refrigerated mortuaries are few and of limited capacity.

The guide also notes there are no international funeral directors in Laos; Bangkok firms handle repatriation. On the requirements for leaving the country with an urn the guide refers to the funeral director; the airline's conditions we find out separately, before the flight.
