Repatriation from Armenia to Moldova

Armenia has no crematorium, and the Moldovan Foreign Ministry's list of missions shows no embassy or consulate there. We help you establish who receives the documents and take the procedure in order.

Issuing authority and document
Armenia is not listed among the parties to the Strasbourg Agreement (1973) on the Transfer of Corpses (Dutch treaty database, checked 13.10.2026), so Armenian rules apply together with the requirements of the Republic of Moldova. The death is registered at the Civic Status Registration Department. The Moldovan Foreign Ministry's list of missions, checked 13 October 2026, contains no embassy or consulate in Armenia and no accreditation note; which mission issues the mortuary passport we find out at the start, directly from the Ministry.
Transport
Armenia is landlocked, so the remains travel by air. We have not confirmed a direct Yerevan–Chișinău flight from any source, so the route and the handover point in Moldova are agreed with the family.
Timing
We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. Registration of a death in Armenia, according to UK guidance, is completed on the day the documents are submitted; the rest depends on the permit to remove the body, on the Moldovan mission, not yet established, and on the flight.
Price
Body (repatriation of remains): from 2 800 €
Ashes (urn): from 800 €

Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.

Procedure

According to UK guidance (checked 13 October 2026), the death is registered at the Civic Status Registration Department free of charge, and the Armenian authorities complete registration on the day the documents are submitted; a funeral director can do it for the family. The medical death certificate and the deceased's identity document are needed. Mortuaries exist in Yerevan and larger cities (Gyumri, Vanadzor, Armavir); in some regions conditions may fall below Yerevan's standard.

To take the body out of the country, the same source asks for the death certificate, permission to remove the body and the deceased's passport. The authority that gives the permission is not named, so we do not present it as a fact and check it at the start; coffin and embalming requirements do not appear in the source.

Documents and their recognition

The Moldovan Foreign Ministry's list on recognition of foreign documents (updated 2 February 2017) places Armenia among the countries whose documents are recognised without legalization, under the 1993 Minsk Convention. Armenia is also a party to the Hague Convention since 14 August 1994, and no objection by Moldova appears in the HCCH table. The list is old, so we confirm whether an Armenian document is accepted in that form; translation from Armenian we establish document by document.

Because no Moldovan mission appears on the Ministry's list, we ask the Ministry of Foreign Affairs directly which office takes the mortuary-passport application for Armenia.

Cremation

UK guidance notes that there are no cremation facilities in Armenia. If the family wants ashes, we discuss cremation in another country separately; the usual option is transport of the body.

Frequently asked questions

Does Moldova have an embassy in Armenia?

On the Ministry of Foreign Affairs list of missions, checked 13 October 2026, no embassy or consulate in Armenia appears. We therefore clarify directly with the Ministry who issues the mortuary passport.

How soon is a death registered in Armenia?

UK guidance says the Armenian authorities complete registration on the day the documents are submitted, free of charge. The remaining steps depend on the permit to remove the body.

Can cremation be arranged in Armenia?

No: UK guidance notes that there are no cremation facilities in the country.

What if the death occurs in a small town?

Mortuaries exist in Yerevan and larger cities; in some regions conditions may be weaker. With the family we establish where the body is kept and how it reaches the airport.
