Repatriation from Jordan to Moldova

In Jordan the law requires burial soon after death, and cremation is not permitted. That is why the family's decision has to be made quickly. We help you take the steps in order.

Issuing authority and document
Jordan is not among the parties to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973), per the Dutch treaty database consulted on 13.10.2026, so Jordanian rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. The death certificate is issued by the Civil Status and Passports Department after the hospital's notification. In the list of missions of the Moldovan Foreign Ministry (consulted on 13.10.2026) we found no embassy or accreditation for Jordan; which mission serves the country we confirm directly with the ministry. The mortuary passport is issued by embassies and consulates of the Republic of Moldova.
Transport
Amman lies about 1,800 km from Chișinău in a straight line (our own calculation), but we found no direct cargo flight in the sources. The mode of transport, connections and handover point in Moldova are set with the family, bearing in mind the short burial deadline.
Timing
Here the clock is set by Jordanian law: burial is required within 24 hours, and a Ministry of Health permit can push that limit to 72 hours if the body is kept in a suitable place. The rest of the timeline we give when we see the documents.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.

Procedure

According to the British guide (updated 23.01.2025, consulted on 13.10.2026), the death is registered with the local authorities, and the funeral director can do it on the family's behalf. The hospital issues the notification of death needed for the certificate; documents proving kinship and a translated copy of the deceased's passport are also required.

The certificate is issued by the Civil Status and Passports Department, in Arabic and without the cause of death; an English version can be requested separately and carries a different number.

Documents

The guide says Jordanian authorities require, for repatriation, a letter of no objection from the embassy based on the written consent of the next of kin; the guide refers to the British embassy, and what Moldova requires is not published, so we confirm it with the ministry. Relatives or an appointed representative instruct a local or an international funeral director.

Jordan is not in the Hague Apostille Convention table (consulted on 13.10.2026) and not in the Moldovan Foreign Ministry list of 2017; for countries not in that list the ministry page says documents are recognised only after consular legalisation. So Jordanian documents are probably prepared with legalisation; we agree the exact list with the mission.

Specifics in Jordan

Jordanian law does not permit cremation, with no religious exemptions, so for Moldova the option is transporting the body. Local burial of foreigners is possible in religious burial grounds.

Because the 24-hour deadline, extendable to 72, is short, the order of steps matters: first the hospital and the certificate, then the permit and the letter of no objection, then preparing the body for the flight.

Frequently asked questions

How much time do we have before burial in Jordan?

The law requires burial within 24 hours of death; a Ministry of Health permit can extend it to up to 72 hours if the body is in a suitable facility, per the British guide. That is why the family's decision has to be made quickly.

Can an urn with ashes be brought from Jordan?

Jordanian law does not permit cremation, so there are no local ashes. Two options remain: burial in Jordan or transporting the body to Moldova.

Which Moldovan embassy serves Jordan?

In the ministry list we found no mission accredited to Jordan. Before filing documents we will confirm with the ministry which mission issues the mortuary passport.

In what language is the Jordanian certificate?

In Arabic; an English version can be requested separately and has a different number. For Moldova documents are translated, and we agree the list of translations with the mission.
