Repatriation from Bangladesh to Moldova

Bangladesh is in South Asia, almost 6,000 km from Moldova. The local procedure starts with the medical certificate and a local funeral director, and the documents must be legalised for Moldova. We take you through the steps in order.

Issuing authority and document
Bangladesh is not listed among the parties to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973), in the public list we consulted on 13.10.2026, so Bangladeshi rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. According to the UK government guidance (updated 08.06.2026), the death certificate is issued by a doctor or hospital, and the death is registered with the union council, municipal office or city corporation. The mortuary passport is issued by a Moldovan embassy or consulate; Bangladesh does not appear in the list of missions on mfa.gov.md (consulted 13.10.2026), so we check the competent mission before submission.
Transport
From Dhaka to Chișinău it is about 6,000 km in a straight line (our own calculation from the capitals' coordinates), so only the air route remains. Bangladesh is missing from a secondary list of the Chișinău airport's destinations; we do not assume a direct flight and choose a route with a stop once we have the documents and the airline's reply.
Timing
We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. The UK page, written for transport to the United Kingdom, mentions 2 to 3 working days for the local formalities; for Moldova the real time depends on the embassy, the legalisation of documents and the connecting flight. If an autopsy is needed or the police are investigating, the body stays at the mortuary and the timeline lengthens.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.

Procedure

The UK guidance (08.06.2026) says the death certificate is issued by a doctor or hospital and that an English version can be requested. The death is then registered with the local authority, but the same page warns that local registration is possible only if the deceased has a Bangladeshi birth certificate. Which local document a foreign national receives we clarify case by case.

If the cause of death is unknown, unusual, sudden or violent, an autopsy may be carried out, and during a police investigation the body is kept at a mortuary. The guidance notes that cultural or religious sensitivities may not be taken into account and that the autopsy report is usually not given to relatives; a local lawyer can request a copy.

Required documents

For repatriation the UK guidance lists the death certificate, the passport of the deceased, a certificate of embalming and a certificate permitting transfer of the body (both through the local funeral director) and a letter of no objection, which for the United Kingdom comes from the British High Commission. For Moldova we confirm the list and any equivalent letter with the embassy.

Bangladesh is a party to the 1961 Hague Convention, in force since 30.03.2025 (HCCH table, 13.10.2026). Several states objected to its accession, but the Republic of Moldova is not among them in the table. We have not verified which Bangladeshi authority issues the apostille and will establish it before submission.

Specifics of Bangladesh

The UK guidance says burials normally take place on the day of death or the following day, and graveyards require the medical certificate and the deceased's identity document. If the family wants a funeral in Moldova, these local timings clash with the preparation of documents, so from the start we ask for the body to be kept at the mortuary.

Cremation is carried out at a crematorium, and a modern one may require moving the body to a major city. For ashes the guidance asks for the death certificate and the cremation certificate, notifying the airline and following the local rules for leaving the country; sending by post or courier may not be possible, while air freight is described as possible but costly.

Frequently asked questions

Who issues the death certificate in Bangladesh?

According to the UK guidance, a doctor or hospital. Local registration is made with the union council, municipal office or city corporation, but the page says it requires a Bangladeshi birth certificate of the deceased.

What does it mean for us that Bangladesh joined the apostille system only in 2025?

The Convention entered into force for Bangladesh on 30.03.2025, so local practice is still recent. At submission we check which authority issues the apostille and whether the embassy accepts the document in the form obtained.

How soon must a local burial take place?

The UK guidance notes that burials usually take place on the day of death or the following day. If the family chooses transport to Moldova, we say from the outset that the body must be kept at the mortuary until the documents are ready.

Can an urn with ashes be sent by post or courier?

The guidance says usually not, but air freight is possible, though it can be expensive. The alternative is that a relative travels with the urn, the death certificate and the cremation certificate, having told the airline in advance.
