Repatriation from Lebanon to Moldova

In Lebanon a death can only be registered on the spot, at the local registry, and the certificate is issued by the community's mukhtar. Moldova is served from Ankara. We help you take the steps in order.

Issuing authority and document
Lebanon is not among the parties to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973), per the Dutch treaty database consulted on 13.10.2026, so Lebanese rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. The death is registered at the local registry (in Arabic, “dā’irat al-nufūs”), usually through the funeral director, and the certificate is issued by the mukhtar. In the list of missions of the Moldovan Foreign Ministry (consulted on 13.10.2026) Lebanon is listed under the embassy in Ankara, which is also accredited to it. The mortuary passport is issued by embassies and consulates of the Republic of Moldova.
Transport
By air. In a straight line it is about 1,600 km from Beirut to Chișinău (our own calculation). The British travel advice (updated 10.08.2026, consulted on 13.10.2026) says Beirut airport is open and operational; the situation can change, so we check before the flight. We found no source on direct cargo flights.
Timing
We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. What matters here is the mukhtar's certificate (copies can be obtained within a week of issue), the Ministry of Health permit, the mortuary passport from the Moldovan mission and the flight available.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Procedure

According to the British guide (updated 09.07.2024, consulted on 13.10.2026), the death is registered at the local registry in the place where the doctor certified the death, usually through the funeral director. A death cannot be registered from outside Lebanon.

The death certificate is issued by the mukhtar, and the doctor who attested the death must sign and stamp it. A version with an English translation can be requested; copies are available from the mukhtar within a week of issue for a nominal fee.

Documents

To remove the body from the country the guide lists the death certificate, the deceased's passport, the Ministry of Health permission to repatriate and the embassy's no-objection letter (in the guide, the British one; what Moldova requires is not published, so we confirm it with the mission).

Lebanon is not in the Hague Apostille Convention table (consulted on 13.10.2026) and not in the Moldovan Foreign Ministry list of 2017; for countries not in it, the ministry page says documents are recognised only after consular legalisation. So Lebanese documents are probably prepared with legalisation; we agree the exact list with the embassy.

Specifics in Lebanon

Lebanese law generally prohibits cremation, and there are currently no cremation facilities in Lebanon. For Moldova the option is transporting the body, unless the family chooses local burial.

Burials take place in religious burial grounds, so the family is asked the deceased's religion. If the cause of death is in question, a post-mortem needs the approval of the General Prosecutor's Office and the family's permission.

Frequently asked questions

Can we register the death from Moldova without going to Lebanon?

Not directly: the British guide says registration cannot be done from outside Lebanon. The local funeral director usually does it, and we coordinate the documents.

Who issues the death certificate in Lebanon?

The community's mukhtar, with the signature and stamp of the doctor who attested the death. A version with an English translation can also be requested.

Can cremation be done in Lebanon?

No: the law generally prohibits it and there are no cremation facilities. The options are local burial or transporting the body to Moldova.

Is Beirut airport operating?

The British travel advice (updated 10.08.2026) says it is open and operational. The situation can change, so we check before fixing the flight.
