Repatriation from Georgia to Moldova

Georgia has no crematorium, the death certificate is usually written in Georgian, and Moldova has no embassy in Tbilisi. We help you take the procedure in order.

Issuing authority and document
Georgia is not listed among the parties to the Strasbourg Agreement (1973) on the Transfer of Corpses (Dutch treaty database, checked 13.10.2026), so Georgian rules apply together with the requirements of the Republic of Moldova. Deaths are registered by the Public Service Development Agency at the nearest Public Service Hall. The Foreign Ministry list of missions shows that Georgia is served by the Moldovan embassy in Baku; the Georgian body that permits the removal of a body from the country we could not find in official sources, and we confirm it at the start.
Transport
From Georgia the remains travel by air. A report dated 28 May 2026 says an airline operates direct passenger flights Chișinău–Tbilisi and, from 28 June 2026, Chișinău–Batumi; whether and when remains can be carried on those flights we check separately for each case.
Timing
We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. It depends on the registration and translation of the certificate, on the permit to remove the body, which we are still clarifying, on the embassy in Baku and on the flight available.
Price
Body (repatriation of remains): from 2 600 €
Ashes (urn): from 800 €

Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.

Procedure

According to UK guidance (checked 13 October 2026), deaths in Georgia are registered by the Public Service Development Agency at the nearest Public Service Hall; registration happens automatically as soon as the agency receives notice of the death. The certificate is usually in Georgian and does not state the cause of death.

For a foreign national, the guidance does not describe the steps for removing a body from the country; the same source only notes that repatriation goes through an international funeral director. The authority that issues the removal permit and the coffin requirements we did not find in official sources, so we do not present them as facts and check them at the start.

Documents and their recognition

The Moldovan Foreign Ministry's list on recognition of foreign documents (updated 2 February 2017) places Georgia among the countries whose documents are recognised without legalization under the 1993 Minsk Convention, in force for Georgia since 11 July 1996. Georgia is also a party to the Hague Apostille Convention since 14 May 2007, with a declaration in the HCCH table, and no objection by Moldova appears there. Because the list is eight years old, we confirm with the embassy whether a Georgian document is accepted in that form.

A certificate in Georgian needs translating; who can do it and how the translation is certified in Moldova we establish case by case.

Cremation

UK guidance states that cremation is not possible in Georgia; for families who want ashes, that would mean cremation in another country, which we discuss separately because the rules for ashes differ. The usual option is transport of the body.

Frequently asked questions

Does Moldova have an embassy in Georgia?

None appears on the Foreign Ministry list of missions; Georgia is served by the embassy in Baku. We confirm at the start which office receives the documents and whether a trip to Baku is needed.

In what language is the Georgian death certificate?

UK guidance says usually Georgian, without the cause of death. A translation is needed for Moldova; we confirm the procedure.

Can cremation be arranged in Georgia?

According to UK guidance, no. If the family wants ashes, we discuss options outside Georgia.

Do Georgian documents need an apostille or legalization?

The 2017 Foreign Ministry list shows Georgia as a country whose documents are recognised without legalization under a treaty. Because the list is old, we confirm with the embassy before filing.
