Repatriation from South Korea to Moldova
In South Korea almost everyone is cremated, so the first question is whether the family wants to bring home the body or the urn. We explain the local steps and prepare the documents for either route.
- Issuing authority and document
- South Korea is not a party to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (public list, checked 13.10.2026), so Korean rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. The death is reported to the local district office by the next of kin or the funeral director, with the medical death certificate. The mortuary passport is issued by a Moldovan embassy or consulate.
- Transport
- South Korea has no land link to Europe, so the body or urn is flown. Whether a direct flight to Chișinău is available we do not assume: we check connections for your case and agree the handover point in Moldova with the family.
- Timing
- We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. It depends on the district office and the hospital, on the police examination if the death was not natural, on the certificates for transfer and on the flight connections.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.
Procedure
According to the UK government's bereavement guide for South Korea (published 27.08.2024), the next of kin or the funeral director files a report of death at the district office, together with the medical death certificate. If the death was not natural, the police issue an examination completion certificate that the hospital needs before it releases the body. This is a guide written for British families, so we confirm the local steps with the Korean funeral director.
For the Moldovan side, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs explains that the mortuary passport for international transport is issued by Moldovan embassies and consulates. Which Moldovan mission serves South Korea we confirm for your case.
Required documents
For the body, the same guide lists: the local death certificate, translated, notarised and apostilled; a certificate of embalming; a certificate that the person did not have a contagious disease; a permit to transfer the remains; and the original passport. For ashes: the death certificate, the cremation certificate and a permit to cremate and take the ashes out of the country. South Korea has been in the Hague Apostille Convention since 14.07.2007, and the HCCH table lists no objection by Moldova. The exact list for Moldova we confirm with you.
Cremation in Korea
Press reports based on Korean data put the national cremation rate at about 94 per cent in 2024. This is a secondary source, but it explains why many families choose the urn, and the guide gives a separate list of documents for the urn. The choice remains with the family, and we prepare both options if you are undecided.
On the Korean side we coordinate with a local funeral director, who, according to the UK guide, can file the report of death on the family's behalf. Seoul and other large cities may have limited crematorium capacity, which can affect the date; we do not promise one.
Frequently asked questions
Is cremation the usual practice in South Korea?
Yes, reports cite a rate of about 94 per cent in 2024. A family can still choose to bring the body home, and we explain both routes.
What happens if the death was not natural?
According to the UK guide, the police issue an examination completion certificate before the hospital releases the body. This can add steps, and we tell you which ones as soon as we know the circumstances.
Which certificates are needed to bring the body home?
The UK guide lists the translated, notarised and apostilled death certificate, an embalming certificate, a certificate of absence of contagious disease and a transfer permit. For Moldova we confirm the final list.
Can we carry the urn ourselves?
The UK guide says ashes can usually be taken home by the family, with the death and cremation certificates and a permit, and advises checking the airline's restrictions. We check the airline's conditions before the flight.
