Repatriation of the body
We arrange the repatriation of remains from abroad to the Republic of Moldova: the documents, the preparation, the journey and the reception at home.
What we arrange
Advice on the procedure in the country of death, the list of documents and help in obtaining them. Coordination with the local funeral service, which prepares the body and the coffin according to the rules, and the mortuary passport (laissez-passer) where it applies.
Transport by air or by road, and handover in Moldova at the place agreed with the family. We will quote the price once we know the country, the city and the other details.
How it works
The rules depend on where the person died. Between countries that are parties to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973), such as France, Spain or Czechia, the body travels with a laissez-passer issued in the country of departure. For other countries, such as Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom or the United States, the national rules and the requirements of the Moldovan consulate apply.
As a rule, the coffin must be hermetically sealed, and some countries have stricter national requirements. Some countries also require embalming. The funeral service in the country of departure prepares the certificates, and we make sure the full set is ready before the journey.
Frequently asked questions
Is embalming required?
It depends on the country. The Strasbourg Agreement does not mention embalming, but the national rules of some countries, such as Spain, require embalming or temporary preservation. We tell you what applies in your case.
Can we choose between air and road transport?
Where the route allows it. From distant countries the journey is by air; from many European countries road transport is also possible. We compare the options with you and agree the handover point in Moldova.
Who signs the documents?
Usually the funeral service or a relative applies. We tell you which documents need a relative's signature and prepare everything else.
How long does it take?
We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. It depends on the local authorities, the Moldovan consulate where it is involved, and the transport available.
