Repatriation from Myanmar to Moldova

Myanmar is in Southeast Asia, far from Moldova. The only official guide we found dates from 2020, so we verify current conditions separately for each case. We help you take the steps in order.

Issuing authority and document
Myanmar is not listed among the parties to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973), in the public list we consulted on 13.10.2026, so local rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. The UK government guide (updated 09.06.2020, during COVID-19) says the death is registered with the local authorities, usually through the funeral director. The mortuary passport is issued by an embassy or consulate of the Republic of Moldova; the list of missions on mfa.gov.md does not include Myanmar, so we check the competent mission before any documents are filed.
Transport
The 2020 UK guide says any repatriation of the body or ashes has to go through Yangon International Airport, even if the death occurred elsewhere, and that at the time there were very few flights. We have not verified the current flight situation and do not assume a direct flight to Chișinău (RMO). The route is agreed with the family once the documents are in hand, using only reconfirmed information.
Timing
We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. The 2020 UK guide says the local certificate is issued within a day or two and repatriation formalities normally take 8 to 10 working days, but it also notes that the police often open a case and closing an investigation can take many months. This data is old; we do not present it as a promise.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.

The procedure

According to the UK guide (09.06.2020, written for British families), the death is registered with the local authorities, usually through the funeral director. The certificate is issued in the local language, usually within a day or two, and the family pays for the translation.

The same guide says local law requires a post-mortem for all foreign nationals, whether the death is natural or suspicious, and that the police often open a case. Because the guide is old and written for British families, we do not present it as the current state of affairs; current rules we check with the Moldovan mission and the local authorities.

Documents required

For repatriation under normal conditions the 2020 UK guide lists the local civil registry death certificate, a certificate of embalming and a certificate permitting the transfer of the remains; the funeral director prepares them. The guide also says that, in the COVID-19 period it describes, without embalming the body could not be repatriated. The current list for Moldova is set with the mission.

Myanmar is not in the table of the 1961 Hague Convention (HCCH, consulted on 13.10.2026), so an apostille cannot be assumed. How documents from Myanmar are legalised for Moldova we settle with the Moldovan mission before sending anything.

Specifics in Myanmar

The 2020 guide mentions that some airlines may refuse to carry human remains and that, in the period it describes, no bodies were embalmed in Myanmar because of COVID-19; we have no confirmation of the current situation.

On ashes, the guide says the funeral director can cremate locally and repatriate the ashes later. It also notes that storage can be affected by power cuts and the monsoon season; safe storage of the body we clarify in advance.

Frequently asked questions

Is a post-mortem mandatory in Myanmar?

The UK guide of 09.06.2020 says local law requires one for all foreign nationals, natural or suspicious. Because it is old, we reconfirm with the mission and the local authorities before any step.

Through which airport does the body leave Myanmar?

The 2020 guide says repatriation of the body or ashes has to go through Yangon International Airport, even if the death occurred in another part of the country. We verify the current situation.

Is embalming necessary?

The 2020 guide says that, in the COVID-19 period it describes, without embalming the body could not be repatriated. If embalming is not possible, the family can choose local cremation and repatriation of the ashes. What is possible now we confirm on the spot.

Can the urn be brought from Myanmar to Moldova?

The 2020 guide says the funeral director can cremate locally and repatriate the ashes later, but it does not describe the urn documents. The requirements for Moldova and the airline we find out before the flight.
