Repatriation from Palestine to Moldova

For Palestine we did not find a published official source on registering the death of a foreign national and taking the body out of the territory. This page says only what we could verify and openly shows what remains to be clarified.

Issuing authority and document
Palestine is not among the parties to the Strasbourg Agreement (1973) on the transfer of corpses (public list, checked 13.10.2026), so local rules apply together with the requirements of the Republic of Moldova. The mortuary passport is issued by an embassy or consulate of the Republic of Moldova. The list of missions on mfa.gov.md (checked 13.10.2026) has an embassy in Tel Aviv but does not say it also serves Palestine, and Palestine itself does not appear in the list; we find the competent mission before filing. We do not name the local authority that registers deaths, because we found no official source.
Transport
Ramallah is about 1,770 km from Chișinău and Gaza about 1,790 km (our own straight-line calculation). Chișinău airport (RMO) lists a flight to Tel Aviv but none to Palestine, and we have no verified source on crossings and exit routes for a body, so we assume nothing: we plan the route once we know the documents, the place of death and the conditions of the competent authorities and the airline.
Timing
A timeline cannot be given before we see the documents: we found no public source on how long formalities take, and it would depend on the competent authorities, the Moldovan mission and the route. We give no estimates.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.

Procedure

The page of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova on deaths abroad (checked 13.10.2026) says that a death is registered with the local authorities of the country, and that a body is transported to Moldova only under the conditions of that country's national law and the applicable international rules. Consular staff can give details and put you in touch with funeral homes.

The UK government guide we found for the region (updated 11.11.2025) covers only Israel and has no content of its own for Palestine. We found no public guide from any government on taking a foreign national's body out of Palestine (search on gov.uk and the web, 13.10.2026), so we do not describe local steps as fact.

Required documents

The Moldovan ministry's page says a foreign death certificate must be legalised by the authorities of that state, and the Moldovan death certificate can be issued on that basis. We do not give a list of local documents for transport, because we found no source confirming one.

Palestine does not appear in the table of the 1961 Hague Convention (HCCH, checked 13.10.2026), so an apostille cannot be assumed. We confirm the order of legalisations for Moldova with the embassy before sending any documents.

What we do not claim

We do not claim which authority issues the transport permit, whether embalming or a particular casket is required, where the body leaves the territory or how long it takes. For these points we have no official source, and they do not appear on the page as facts.

We confirm the competent Moldovan mission before any step rather than assuming it from geographical closeness. If a piece of information has no source it does not go on the page; we add it only once we can confirm it.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a published official procedure for deaths in Palestine?

We found none for foreign nationals: the British guide on gov.uk for the region covers only Israel, and the search of 13.10.2026 gave no other official source. So this page contains only verified Moldovan rules.

Does the Moldovan embassy in Tel Aviv also handle Palestine?

The list on mfa.gov.md (checked 13.10.2026) shows the embassy in Tel Aviv but does not say it is also accredited to Palestine. We do not assume; we find the competent mission before filing documents.

Are documents from Palestine apostilled?

It cannot be assumed: Palestine does not appear in the table of the 1961 Hague Convention. The Moldovan ministry's page says a foreign certificate is legalised by the authorities of that state; we confirm the order with the embassy.

Can you say where the body leaves the territory?

No. We have no official source on crossings and exit routes, and such information can change. We learn it from the competent authorities and tell the family only once it is confirmed.
