Repatriation from Cambodia to Moldova

Cambodia is in Southeast Asia, very far from Moldova. The local certificate is in Khmer, and the paperwork can take weeks. We help you take the steps in order.

Issuing authority and document
Cambodia is not listed among the parties to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973), in the public list we consulted on 13.10.2026, so Cambodian rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. According to a UK government guide (updated 07.02.2022, so possibly partly out of date), the death is registered with the local authorities, and a Cambodian funeral director can obtain the certificate. The mortuary passport is issued by an embassy or consulate of the Republic of Moldova; the list of missions on mfa.gov.md does not include Cambodia, so we check the competent mission before any documents are filed.
Transport
From Southeast Asia the transport is by air; we found no source confirming a direct flight to Chișinău (RMO), so we do not assume one. The UK guide says repatriation is not always possible, and consular staff tell the family if that is the case. The route is agreed with the family once the documents are in hand.
Timing
We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. The UK guide (2022) says the death certificate can take about four to six weeks or longer, and local repatriation formalities can take up to seven days. Hospital and mortuary bills must be paid before the body is released, and refrigeration is scarce, so long-term storage cannot be assumed.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

The procedure

According to the UK guide (07.02.2022), the death is registered with the local authorities, and a Cambodian funeral director can obtain the certificate. The certificate is issued in Khmer; the family pays for an official translation. The cause of death is often stated without detail.

The guide says no law sets a deadline for interment, but refrigeration is scarce, so arrangements should be made as soon as possible. In certain circumstances the authorities may order a local cremation on public health grounds. Because the guide is written for British families and dates from 2022, we confirm the steps for the Moldovan side with the Moldovan mission.

Documents required

The UK guide only says the funeral director prepares the repatriation documents; it says nothing on embalming or the coffin, so we settle those requirements with the local funeral director and the airline. The guide mentions the local death certificate (in Khmer, with an official translation paid by the family); we settle the full list for Moldova with the mission.

Cambodia is not in the table of the 1961 Hague Convention (HCCH, consulted on 13.10.2026), so an apostille cannot be assumed. How Cambodian documents are legalised for Moldova we settle with the Moldovan mission before sending anything.

Specifics in Cambodia

Cremation is traditional and usually takes place at a Wat (Buddhist temple). The guide says the law requires a cremation permission from the Ministry of Health and a death certificate or certification from a hospital or the forensic police. Cremated remains are not fine ashes and include large pieces of bone.

After a local cremation the relative can take the urn or have it sent through a Cambodian funeral director. The guide says nothing on the documents for the urn; these, and the airline's requirements, we find out separately before the flight.
