Repatriation from Sri Lanka to Moldova

Sri Lanka is an island a long way away, and the local procedure begins with a medical notice of death and can depend on an investigation. We take you through the steps and prepare the documents for the Moldovan side.

Issuing authority and document
Sri Lanka is not a party to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (public list, checked 13.10.2026), so Sri Lankan rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. According to the UK government guidance (updated 28.09.2026), a death must be registered with the local authorities after a doctor or judicial medical officer (JMO) completes a notice of death. The mortuary passport is issued by a Moldovan embassy or consulate; which mission serves Sri Lanka we check before the documents are submitted.
Transport
Being an island, Sri Lanka sends remains or ashes by air only. A direct flight to Chișinău (RMO) is not assumed, as we found none confirmed; the route and the handover point in Moldova are agreed with the family once we know what the airline requires.
Timing
We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. It depends on the issue of the notice and the certificate, on a possible post-mortem and a magistrates' court inquiry, which the UK guidance says can delay the documents for a funeral or repatriation, and on the flight connections.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Procedure

According to the UK government guidance (28.09.2026, written for British families), a doctor or judicial medical officer first completes the notice of death, and the death is then registered with the local registrar. The next of kin, a legal representative or a funeral director authorised by the next of kin can apply once the notice has been issued. Delays are possible if investigations are under way.

The guidance says post-mortem examinations are carried out when required, by judicial medical officers, for example when a death is unclear, sudden or unexpected. If the case is referred to the Magistrates' Court, the certificate and the approvals for a funeral or repatriation can be delayed. Since the guidance is written for British families, we confirm the steps for the Moldovan side with the embassy.

Required documents

According to the guidance, repatriation usually requires the death certificate, an embalming certificate and an export permit for human remains, sometimes other documents required by the receiving country or the airline. If the certificate is not in English, an official translation is needed.

Sri Lanka does not appear in the table of the 1961 Hague Convention (HCCH, checked 13.10.2026), so an apostille cannot be assumed. How Sri Lankan documents are legalised for Moldova we confirm with the Moldovan mission before sending anything.

Specifics of Sri Lanka

The UK guidance says that both local burial and local cremation are permitted. In the first 24 to 48 hours families are advised to decide between repatriation, cremation and burial, because the tropical climate and limited refrigeration in some mortuaries make delays risky; where delays are expected, the body may be moved to a larger city with suitable facilities.

As for ashes, the guidance says they can be taken home by family members or sent through a funeral director, but usually not by standard courier services. So the urn travels only by a channel we confirm in advance.

Frequently asked questions

Who completes the death papers first in Sri Lanka?

According to the UK guidance (28.09.2026), a doctor or judicial medical officer (JMO) completes the notice of death; only then is the death registered with the registrar.

What documents does repatriating a body from Sri Lanka need?

Usually the death certificate, the embalming certificate and an export permit for human remains, sometimes others depending on the destination and the airline. We agree the exact list with the embassy.

Can the urn be sent by courier?

No. The guidance says ashes usually cannot be sent through standard courier services. Relatives can carry them or a funeral director can transport them; we find out the conditions before the flight.

Is burial or cremation possible in Sri Lanka?

Yes, both are permitted, according to the UK guidance. The choice is the family's; we explain what each option means for the documents.
