Documents and translations

We help collect, translate and apostille the documents needed to bring a loved one home to Moldova, and to register the death in the Republic of Moldova.

What we arrange

The list of documents for your country of death and for the Moldovan side, help with obtaining the certificates, translations into Romanian (the state language of Moldova), and an apostille or legalisation where needed.

The application for the mortuary passport (laissez-passer) where it applies, and the documents for the Moldovan consulate.

How it works

The death is first registered in the country where it occurred. That death certificate can then be transcribed at an embassy or consulate of the Republic of Moldova; if it is not, a Moldovan certificate is issued in Moldova on the basis of the legalised foreign one.

Moldova has applied the Hague Apostille Convention since 2007, so documents from other member countries are confirmed with an apostille. Documents from Romania are valid in Moldova without legalisation under a bilateral treaty.

Frequently asked questions

Into which language must the documents be translated?

Into Romanian, the state language of Moldova. We tell you which documents need a translation and in what form.

What is an apostille?

An apostille is a certificate that confirms a public document for use in another country that applies the Hague Convention. Moldova has applied the Convention since 2007.

Must the death also be registered in Moldova?

As a rule, yes: the foreign death record is transcribed into the Moldovan civil register, at a consulate or later in Moldova. According to the Public Services Agency (ASP, 2024), the transcription must be declared within 6 months of returning to Moldova or receiving the document.
