Repatriation from Yemen to Moldova
For Yemen we did not find a public guide from any government on repatriating the deceased. This page says only what we could verify and openly shows what remains to be clarified with the embassy.
- Issuing authority and document
- Yemen is not among the parties to the Strasbourg Agreement (1973) on the transfer of corpses (public list, checked 13.10.2026), so Yemeni rules apply together with the requirements of the Republic of Moldova. The mortuary passport is issued by an embassy or consulate of the Republic of Moldova; Yemen does not appear in the list of missions on mfa.gov.md (checked 13.10.2026), so we find the competent mission before filing. We found no foreign government guide on deaths in Yemen (gov.uk search, 13.10.2026).
- Transport
- Sana'a is about 3,800 km from Chișinău and Aden about 4,100 km (our own straight-line calculation). The destinations list of Chișinău airport (RMO) shows no flights to Yemen, and we have no verified source on airports or routes in Yemen, so we assume nothing: we plan the route once we know the documents, the place of death and the airline's conditions.
- Timing
- How long formalities take in Yemen we cannot say: we found no public source, so we give no estimates. The duration would depend on the Yemeni authorities, the competent Moldovan embassy and the route, and we discuss a timeline only after seeing the documents.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.
Procedure
The page of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova on deaths abroad (checked 13.10.2026) says that transporting a body to Moldova is possible only under the conditions of the law of the country of death and the applicable international rules. We have no verified source on Yemeni law, so we do not describe local steps as fact.
The only official text we found that touches the subject is the page of the Embassy of India in Riyadh (published in its Yemen services section), written for Indian citizens. It says that Yemeni death certificates must be attested first by Yemen's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and only then by the embassy. This is another state's rule, not Moldova's, so we use it only as an indication of local practice.
Required documents
For its consent to transport a body, the same Indian embassy page asks for a mortuary certificate stating that the body has been embalmed and sealed in a casket; the deceased's passport is requested there for cancellation. For Moldova we set the exact list of documents and who issues them with the embassy, not by another state's rules.
Yemen does not appear in the table of the 1961 Hague Convention (HCCH, checked 13.10.2026), so an apostille cannot be assumed. The page of the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs says a foreign death certificate must be legalised by the authorities of that state; we confirm the order of legalisations for Yemen with the embassy before sending any documents.
What we do not claim
We do not claim that embalming, a post-mortem or cremation is mandatory or possible in Yemen: we have no source that says so. The Indian embassy page mentions a crematorium certificate for ashes, but does not say whether crematoria exist in Yemen.
When the choice is between an uncertain promise and saying "we do not know yet", we say the latter. Before any step the family receives from us a list of what we have verified and what we are still going to verify.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an official guide on repatriating the deceased from Yemen?
We found none: gov.uk has no page for Yemen (search of 13.10.2026). So this page shows only what we could verify.
What does a foreign embassy require for a death in Yemen?
The Embassy of India in Riyadh asks for the Yemeni certificate attested by Yemen's foreign ministry and, for transport, a mortuary certificate on embalming and a sealed casket. These are another state's rules; they do not apply to Moldova automatically.
Which Moldovan embassy handles Yemen?
In the list on mfa.gov.md (checked 13.10.2026) Yemen appears neither as a country with a mission nor as a country assigned to another mission. We find the competent mission before filing documents.
Can the ashes be brought from Yemen?
We have no source confirming that cremation is possible in Yemen or what documents the authorities require for an urn, so we cannot say yes or no. We check it separately once we see the actual situation.
