Repatriation from India to Moldova

In India the death is registered at the local registrar's office, and mortuaries often have limited space, so decisions have to be made quickly. We keep in touch with the authorities, the funeral director and the embassy of the Republic of Moldova, and you have one point of contact.

Issuing authority and document
India is not listed among the parties to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973), by the public list seen on 13.10.2026, so Indian rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. The death is registered at the local registrar's office; if the cause is unclear, the police order a forensic examination. The mortuary passport is issued by the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova, which has a mission in New Delhi.
Transport
As a rule by air. The handover point in Moldova and the route are discussed with the family from the start; they depend on the city in India and on the documents.
Timing
We give a realistic timeline once the papers arrive. It depends on the registrar, on the police and the forensic examination where they are needed, on the embassy and on the route.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Procedure

The death is registered in person at the local registrar's office; it is reported, as the case may be, by the hospital, the family or the police. A medical certificate of the cause of death comes first. An Indian death certificate does not normally state the cause of death.

If the death does not have an obvious natural cause or no doctor has certified the cause, the police arrange a forensic examination, and the body is released after it. The body must be embalmed before repatriation; embalming can be arranged by the hospital, the mortuary or the funeral director.

Required documents

Usually needed: the Indian death certificate, the identity document of the deceased, the embalming certificate, the papers of the funeral director and, in the case of an unnatural death, the police documents. India is a party to the 1961 Hague Convention (in force since 14 July 2005) and the Republic of Moldova has not objected. Which form of confirmation the embassy accepts for Indian civil status documents (for example, whether an apostille is needed and which authority issues it) we learn from the embassy before submission, as with the exact list.

Specifics of India

Most mortuaries are state-run, in large hospitals, and in rural areas mortuaries and refrigeration are often missing. The authorities ask for a prompt decision on the funeral, so we contact the funeral director in good time.

Ashes cannot be sent by courier or ordinary post, only as air freight. Cremation is usually carried out on a wooden pyre, and larger cities also have electric crematoriums.

Frequently asked questions

Where is a death registered in India, and by whom?

At the local registrar's office, in person (not online). It is reported, as the case may be, by the hospital, the family or the police. Funeral directors do not normally register the death, but usually collect the certificate.

Is embalming required?

For repatriating a body from India, consular guidance treats it as necessary; the embalming certificate is part of the usual list of documents. The hospital, the mortuary or the funeral director can arrange it. We confirm the exact list with the embassy.

How are Indian documents confirmed for use in Moldova?

India is a party to the 1961 Hague Convention (since 14 July 2005) and the Republic of Moldova has not objected. Which Indian authority issues the apostille and whether other steps come first we confirm with the embassy for your case.

Can ashes be sent from India to Moldova?

Yes. Ashes cannot be sent by courier or ordinary post; they travel as air freight or with an accompanying person. The documents needed for an urn depend on the city in India.
