Repatriation from Kyrgyzstan to Moldova
Kyrgyzstan is about 3,600 km from Chișinău in a straight line. Documents are issued in Kyrgyz and in the Russian language, and the transfer needs a zinc coffin sealing report. We help you take it in order.
- Issuing authority and document
- Kyrgyzstan is not on the public list of parties to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973), which we consulted on 13.10.2026, so Kyrgyz rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. According to the British government guide for Kyrgyzstan (published 24.10.2025), the death is registered at the local registry office, and the certificate is issued by ZAGS (the State Registry Service). Kyrgyzstan does not appear in the list of Moldovan missions on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website (consulted 13.10.2026), and we found no other official source on which mission covers it. We confirm with the Ministry at the outset who issues the mortuary passport.
- Transport
- By air. It is about 3,600 km in a straight line from Bishkek to Chișinău (our own calculation, approximate coordinates). We have not verified whether there are direct flights to Chișinău (RMO) or which airlines accept remains, so the route and connections are planned for each case, and the sealed zinc coffin is prepared before the flight.
- Timing
- We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. The British guide (2025) says collecting the documents and issuing the certificate takes 3 to 5 business days, and local repatriation formalities normally around 7 days. The figures come from the guide and are not our promise: in practice the timeline also depends on the Moldovan mission and the route, and the long distance needs several legs of transport.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.
Procedure
The death is registered at the local registry office. Certificates are issued in Kyrgyz and in the Russian language; the British guide notes that a local translator may be needed. If the cause of death is unknown, unnatural, sudden or violent, a post-mortem may take place; organs can be taken for testing without the relatives' consent, at the doctor's discretion, and are normally returned before the body is released.
For repatriation the British guide lists the medical and civil death certificates, a certificate permitting the transfer of the remains together with a zinc coffin sealing report, a copy of the deceased's passport and a copy of the ID of the accompanying person. Embalming is not mentioned in the guide.
Required documents
Usually needed: the death certificates, the transfer permit with the zinc coffin sealing report, a copy of the passport and the ID of the accompanying person. Kyrgyzstan appears in the status table of the Hague Apostille Convention (in force since 31.07.2011, table consulted 13.10.2026), but in the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs list on the recognition of documents (last update 02.02.2017) the apostille is marked as not applicable, and Kyrgyz documents are recognised without legalisation under the 1993 Minsk Convention. For each case we confirm with the Ministry what is required today.
Specifics of Kyrgyzstan
According to the British guide, there is no cremation service in Kyrgyzstan, so we plan on transporting the body. Local burial needs a Kyrgyz funeral director.
Documents are also issued in the Russian language, so we prepare the Romanian translations with both languages of the certificate in mind.
Frequently asked questions
In which languages are documents issued in Kyrgyzstan?
According to the British government guide (published 24.10.2025), death certificates are issued in Kyrgyz and in the Russian language. Which translations are needed for Moldova we determine from the documents.
What is a zinc coffin sealing report?
The British guide lists it among the documents for the transfer of remains. Who draws it up in each case and which coffin requirements apply to the flight to Moldova we check together with the funeral director and the Moldovan mission.
Do documents from Kyrgyzstan need an apostille?
In the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs list (02.02.2017) the apostille for Kyrgyzstan is marked as not applicable, and documents are recognised under the 1993 Minsk Convention; the list is old, so we confirm today's procedure with the Ministry.
Can cremation take place in Kyrgyzstan?
No. The British guide says there is no cremation service in Kyrgyzstan. The options are local burial or transporting the body to Moldova.
