Transport of ashes (urn)

If the family has chosen cremation, we help bring the ashes home to the Republic of Moldova: the documents, the transport requirements for the urn and careful transport.

What we arrange

Advice on the documents for ashes in the country of death, including the cremation certificate and the death certificate, a check that the urn meets the transport requirements, and transport to Moldova with handover at the agreed place.

Ashes are not covered by the Strasbourg Agreement, so each country applies its own rules. The requirements for ashes are different from those for a body, and we confirm the list for your country.

How it works

After cremation, the crematorium issues a cremation certificate. Together with the death certificate, it is the basis for taking the ashes abroad. Some countries ask for more, for example a coroner's certificate in Ireland.

The urn can travel by air or by road. When the urn arrives, Moldovan customs, as a rule, asks for the original mortuary passport or death certificate and the transport documents.

We will quote the price once we know the details and confirm the timeline once we have the documents.

Frequently asked questions

Is a mortuary passport needed for ashes?

Sources differ on this, and practice depends on the country of death and the consulate. We confirm the requirement for your case before the journey.

Can a relative carry the urn?

Some families prefer to carry the urn themselves. Whether this is possible depends on the carrier and the countries involved, and we check it for your route.

Does the urn have to meet any requirements?

Carriers and some countries have their own requirements for urns. We check them for your route before the journey and tell you if anything needs to change.
