Repatriation from Bahrain to Moldova
Bahrain is a party to the Apostille Convention and has a cremation ground, but we found nothing published on which Moldovan mission serves it. We help you clarify that and the papers.
- Issuing authority and document
- Bahrain is not among the 24 states listed for the Strasbourg Agreement (1973) in the Dutch treaty database, consulted on 13.10.2026, so Bahraini rules apply. According to the British guide (published 31.03.2026), the hospital notifies the registering authority, and the Bahraini Ministry of Foreign Affairs attests the death certificate. The mission list on mfa.gov.md does not mention Bahrain; which mission serves it we confirm directly.
- Transport
- Transport from Bahrain is by air, for remains or for ashes; for ashes the British guide asks you to inform the airline in advance. The list of flights from Chisinau that we consulted (Wikipedia, destinations table, consulted 13.10.2026) shows no direct flights to Bahrain; the route with a connection and the airline that carries remains we confirm separately.
- Timing
- We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. It depends on the police certificate, the attestation by the foreign ministry, the sponsor cancelling the residence and any decision by the prosecutor on a post-mortem, as well as on the Moldovan mission and the route.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.
Procedure
If the death happened in hospital, the hospital notifies the registering authority; outside hospital the police do. The death certificate and the notification of cause of death are collected by the next of kin or a representative, for example a funeral firm (locally called a clearing agent). The Public Prosecution decides whether a post-mortem is needed, and the police issue the transfer certificate for the body.
If the deceased was a resident, the employer or sponsor cancels the residence visa at the Nationality, Passport and Residence Affairs office. For repatriation the British guide also lists the embalming and sealing certificate, the deceased's cancelled passport, and, being written for the UK, also a funeral firm at the destination to collect the body from the airport.
Required documents
Usually: the death certificate attested by the Bahraini Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the police transfer certificate, the embalming and sealing certificate and the deceased's passport. Bahrain is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, in force since 31.12.2013 (HCCH), with a declaration whose text we did not read; in the Moldovan foreign ministry's list (02.02.2017) it appears in the column of documents with an apostille. So Bahraini documents are, as a rule, apostilled; we check the declaration and the mission's requirements.
Specifics
The British guide mentions a Hindu cremation ground near the ALBA plant in Askar, where cremation is on a wooden pyre; whether it is open to others we did not check. The ashes can be collected about a day later. To take ashes out of the country the death certificate, the cremation certificate and the cancelled passport are needed, and the guide warns that they cannot always be sent by post or courier.
Frequently asked questions
Can cremation be done in Bahrain?
The British guide (2026) mentions a Hindu cremation ground near ALBA in Askar. We did not check whether it is open to everyone; we clarify in each case.
How are ashes taken out of Bahrain?

Which Moldovan mission serves Bahrain?
The list on mfa.gov.md (13.10.2026) does not mention Bahrain. We do not guess; we ask the foreign ministry which mission is responsible for the mortuary passport.
Are apostilled documents needed?
