Repatriation from Malaysia to Moldova

Malaysia is far away, and the death is registered through the funeral director at the National Registration Department. We found no mission accredited to Malaysia in the Moldovan Foreign Ministry list. We help you take the steps in order.

Issuing authority and document
Malaysia is not among the parties to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973), per the Dutch treaty database consulted on 13.10.2026, so Malaysian rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. The death is registered by the funeral director at the National Registration Department (NRD), which issues the certificate. In the list of missions of the Moldovan Foreign Ministry (consulted on 13.10.2026) we found no mission accredited to Malaysia; which mission serves the country we confirm with the ministry. The mortuary passport is issued by embassies and consulates of the Republic of Moldova.
Transport
By air. Kuala Lumpur is roughly 8,500 km from Chișinău in a straight line (our own calculation); no direct flight appears in the sources we found, so the route with connections and the handover point in Moldova are chosen together with the family.
Timing
We do not name a timeline before we see the documents. A possible post-mortem weighs most, then the embalming certificate with the transfer permit, the legalisation of documents and connections on the long route.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Procedure

According to the British guide (published 02.11.2022, consulted on 13.10.2026), the funeral director registers the death at the National Registration Department (NRD), which issues the local certificate in Malay and English; some information may be in Malay only.

If the cause of death is unknown, unexpected or violent, a post-mortem is usually carried out by forensic doctors appointed by the court. The guide says the family's consent is not asked and that small tissue samples or organs may be retained for testing without the next of kin's consent.

Documents

For repatriation the guide lists the NRD death certificate, a certificate of embalming and a permit to transfer the remains. Some hospitals also ask for the embassy's letter of no objection (in the guide, the British one) before releasing the body; what Moldova requires is not published, so we confirm it with the ministry.

Malaysia is not in the Hague Apostille Convention table (consulted on 13.10.2026) and not in the Moldovan Foreign Ministry list of 2017; for countries not in it, the ministry page says documents are recognised only after consular legalisation. So Malaysian documents are probably prepared with legalisation; we agree the exact list with the mission.

Cremation and urn

For local cremation, a relative or appointed representative instructs a local funeral director. To take ashes out of Malaysia, the guide asks you to show the cremation certificate on departure; airlines have their own rules for the urn, which we learn before the flight.

The Moldovan Foreign Ministry list shows no mission for Malaysia, so we start contact with the ministry about the mortuary passport early.

Frequently asked questions

Who registers the death in Malaysia?

The funeral director, at the National Registration Department, which issues the certificate in Malay and English. We coordinate the documents.

Is a post-mortem carried out, and is the family's consent asked?

If the cause of death is unknown, unexpected or violent, a post-mortem is usually carried out, without the family's consent, per the British guide. It can lengthen the timeline.

What is needed to take ashes out of Malaysia?

The British guide asks for the cremation certificate on departure. We learn the airline's rules for the urn before the flight.

Do Malaysian documents need legalisation?

Malaysia is not in the apostille table, and the 2017 ministry list says documents from countries not in it are recognised only after consular legalisation. Probably yes; we confirm with the mission.
