Repatriation from Oman to Moldova

Oman is far away, and the paperwork goes through the Royal Oman Police, not a city hall. Moldova has no embassy of its own in Oman; the country is served from Ankara. We help you take the steps in order.

Issuing authority and document
Oman is not among the parties to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973), per the Dutch treaty database consulted on 13.10.2026, so Omani rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. The death is registered at the civil status office of the Royal Oman Police, which also issues the certificate. The list of missions of the Moldovan Foreign Ministry (consulted on 13.10.2026) shows no embassy in Oman: the country is listed under the embassy in Ankara, which is also accredited to Oman. The mortuary passport is issued by embassies and consulates of the Republic of Moldova.
Transport
Transport is by air: Muscat lies roughly 3,700 km in a straight line from Chișinău (our own calculation). The sources say nothing about a direct cargo link; the route, connections and handover point in Moldova are decided once we see the documents.
Timing
We give the timeline when we see the documents. What matters here is the Royal Oman Police letter releasing the body, embalming with its certificates, the mortuary passport from the Moldovan mission and the flight available.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.

Procedure

According to the British guide (consulted on 13.10.2026), the death must be registered at the civil status office of the Royal Oman Police, usually through the funeral director. The notification of death is issued by the hospital or, if the death happened elsewhere, by the police; the police countersign and stamp all notifications.

The death certificate is issued in Arabic and English and does not give the cause of death. The guide advises requesting extra copies.

Documents

The guide says international regulations require the body to be embalmed and kept in a zinc-lined coffin. For the flight, the airline receives the death certificate, an embalming certificate, a certificate that the remains are free of infectious disease and a coffin-sealing certificate. The guide does not say who issues the last three, so we clarify this at the start.

Oman is a party to the 1961 Hague Convention (in force since 30.01.2012, HCCH table of 13.10.2026) and appears in the Moldovan Foreign Ministry list of countries with simplified document recognition (updated 02.02.2017). What translations and form of documents the embassy in Ankara requires, we did not find published; we confirm directly with it.

Specifics in Oman

Western-style cremation is offered only in Sohar, and Hindu-style in Sohar and Salalah. For cremation the guide asks, among other things, for the police release-of-body letter and the consent of the next of kin. Ashes can be sent as air freight; post or courier may not be permitted.

The guide indicates that the police move the body to the police mortuary in Qurum. Moldova is represented in Oman by the embassy in Ankara, so we start contact with it early.
