Repatriation from Brunei to Moldova
Brunei is a small state in South-East Asia, thousands of kilometres from Moldova. Public information about the local procedure is scarce and dated, so we say openly what is confirmed and what we check separately with each family.
- Issuing authority and document
- Brunei is not listed among the parties to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973), in the public list we consulted on 13.10.2026, so Bruneian rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. According to the UK government guide (January 2019), the police are notified when a foreigner dies, and the death certificate is issued in English. The mortuary passport is issued by a Moldovan embassy or consulate; Brunei does not appear in the list of missions on mfa.gov.md (consulted 13.10.2026), so we establish the competent embassy before the documents are submitted.
- Transport
- The straight-line distance to Chișinău is about 9,300 km (our own calculation from the capitals' coordinates), so the remains or ashes can only travel by air, with at least one stop. We found no source confirming a direct flight to Chișinău (RMO), and the airport's route list shows no scheduled flights to Brunei. We choose the route together with the family once we have the documents and the carrier's conditions.
- Timing
- We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. The UK guide says the autopsy is mandatory before repatriation, the hospital must be paid before the body is released, and the death certificate takes about a week after the cause is identified; preparation of the body and connecting flights come on top.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.
Procedure
According to the UK guide of January 2019 (more than six years old, so we read it as orientation, not as a rule), the police are notified when a foreigner dies in Brunei and in turn inform the relevant mission. Before repatriation or cremation an autopsy must be carried out by appointed doctors with forensic qualifications.
Bodies are kept in cold storage, mostly at RIPAS hospital in Bandar Seri Begawan or in Kuala Belait. The guide says hospital bills must be paid before the body is released. The preparation for transport is done by local undertakers, who in Brunei also act as forwarding companies.
Required documents
According to the same guide, shipping the body requires the local civil registry death certificate, the doctor's post-mortem report stating the cause of death, a certificate of embalming and a certificate permitting transfer of the remains. For Moldova we confirm the list with the embassy, since the source is written for British families.
Brunei is a party to the 1961 Hague Convention (accession 23.02.1987, in force since 03.12.1987, HCCH table checked 13.10.2026), so Bruneian documents are apostilled. We have not yet verified which Bruneian authority issues the apostille and will establish it before submission.
Specifics of Brunei
The UK guide requires the body to be embalmed and placed in a zinc-lined coffin for repatriation; local undertakers have such coffins for international carriage. It also advises against local cremation, because at the time of writing the facilities were considered inadequate.
For an urn, the guide asks for the cremation certificate and the death certificate, and the urn must be sealed by the Brunei Ministry of Health. The death certificate is issued in English, which may simplify translation. The contact details in the guide date from 2019 and we do not use them.
Frequently asked questions
Why is an autopsy performed in Brunei before transport?
The 2019 UK guide says that in Brunei an autopsy must be carried out before repatriation or cremation, by doctors with forensic qualifications. If the rule has changed since, we find out from the local authorities and the embassy.
Can the ashes be brought to Moldova from Brunei?
The guide describes this option: the cremation certificate, the death certificate and an urn sealed by the Brunei Ministry of Health. It also warns that local cremation facilities were considered inadequate, so we check the current situation before proposing it.
Is there a direct flight from Brunei to Chișinău?
We found no confirmation of one and do not assume it exists. Brunei is not on the Chișinău airport's route list. We set a route with connections once we have the documents and the airline's conditions.
Can we know in advance which authority issues the apostille in Brunei?
Not yet: Brunei is in the Hague Convention table, but we have not verified the competent authority. We establish it before the documents are submitted, so you do not lose time on the wrong stamp.
