Repatriation from Indonesia to Moldova
Indonesia is an archipelago very far from Moldova, and the paperwork is handled by local offices on the island where the death occurred. We help you go through it in order and prepare the documents for the Moldovan side.
- Issuing authority and document
- Indonesia is not a party to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (public list, checked on 13.10.2026), so Indonesian rules apply together with the requirements of the Republic of Moldova. The mortuary passport is issued by embassies or consulates of the Republic of Moldova. The list of missions on mfa.gov.md (checked on 13.10.2026) shows no mission covering Indonesia, so we confirm the competent mission at the start of each case.
- Transport
- By air. Indonesia spreads over many islands and the place of departure may be far from the capital; we look for connections from the exact city and do not assume a direct flight to Chișinău.
- Timing
- We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. It depends on the local civil registry, on the authority that grants permission to remove the body, on any post-mortem examination and on the flight connections.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.
Procedure
According to the UK government guidance (updated 29.09.2026), a death is registered at the local registry office in Indonesia; a funeral director can do this on the family's behalf with a written letter of authorisation. After registration a death certificate (Akta Kematian) is issued; it can be requested in English too, and the guidance recommends extra copies.
To take the body out of the country, the same guidance asks for permission issued by the Port Health Authority or another competent authority, the English copy of the certificate and the deceased's passport. The guidance is written for British families, so we confirm the steps for the Moldovan side with the competent Moldovan mission.
Required documents
Usually needed: the Akta Kematian with a translation, the permission to remove the body, the passport of the deceased and the documents of the person applying. For ashes, the UK guidance asks for the death and cremation certificates, the passport and advance notice to the airline.
Indonesia is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention (in force since 04.06.2022), and the HCCH table shows no objection from the Republic of Moldova. The table also lists a declaration by Indonesia whose text we have not read, so we confirm which authority issues the apostille before sending any documents.
Post-mortem and ashes
The UK guidance says a post-mortem is carried out with the consent or at the request of the next of kin, and that the police can order one for an investigation. It also notes that the rules for ashes differ by location in Indonesia and that local postal services can be unreliable, so we do not start from sending ashes by post.
Because we found no Moldovan mission in Indonesia, contact with the covering mission starts early, and we give no timeline before it is confirmed.
