Repatriation from Mauritius to Poland
We organise bringing the deceased from Mauritius to Poland: documents from the country of death, Polish permits and transport of the body or urn.
- Issuing authority and document
- Certificate: the Polish consul confirmed in your case. The export permit comes from the authorities of the country of death.
- Transport
- The body is carried by air as air cargo. We agree the arrival airport and the handover point in Poland with the family.
- Timing
- The starosta and the consul have up to 3 days for their documents (Article 14(5) of the Act on Cemeteries). We give the full timing once the documents from Mauritius are collected.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Procedure: Mauritius
Poland is not a party to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Conveyance of Corpses, so bringing a body from Mauritius always requires the Polish consul's certificate.
Documents from Mauritius are authenticated with an apostille if a Polish office asks for it (the country is a party to the Hague Convention, HCCH, as of 13 October 2026).
Mauritius: the honorary consul in Plaine Magnien
On the page of the Polish Embassy in Nairobi, the bilateral relations list shows Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, Somalia and Uganda. We confirm the post responsible for this country in your case. A Polish Honorary Consulate operates in Plaine Magnien. We establish with the embassy which matters this consul may handle.
For this reason we do not assume that the consul's certificate can be obtained on the island itself. We plan for part of the formalities to go to Nairobi, and from the start we agree with the embassy how documents are to be sent. We also make sure that the local death documents and the approvals for removing remains or ashes from the island are complete before they reach the consul. The responsible Mauritian office that issues them we establish in your case. We organise contact with the post and transport to Poland.
In Mauritius a death must be registered within 48 hours at the Civil Status Office of the district where the person died or last lived. One declarant is enough. The office asks for a certificate of the cause of death, a birth or marriage certificate, an identity document (a passport for a foreigner) and proof of the deceased's address. After registration a permit for burial or cremation is issued. On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, from 8:45 a.m. to noon, thirteen selected offices are open, including Port Louis, Mahébourg and Curepipe. Outside these hours the local police station directs you to an on-call officer. We plan around this short deadline from the first day: we prepare the declaration, the death certificate and the documents for the consul in Nairobi so that nothing waits on the family.
