Repatriation from Angola to Poland
We help bring the deceased from Angola to Poland: documents from the country of death, Polish permits and transport of the body or urn.
- Issuing authority and document
- Export documents are issued by the authorities of the country of death; we confirm them in your case. Polish certificate: the Polish Embassy in Luanda.
- Transport
- The body is carried by air as air cargo. We agree the arrival airport and the handover point in Poland with the family.
- Timing
- We confirm the timing once we have the documents. The law provides that the starosta and the consul issue their documents within 3 days of the application at the latest (Article 14(5) of the Act on Cemeteries and Burial of the Dead); in practice time is added for the sanepid's opinion and delivery of the originals, and the time needed for matters in the country of death depends on the local offices.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Procedure: Angola
This country is not a party to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Conveyance of Corpses of 1973 (according to the Netherlands treaty database, as of 13 October 2026). Poland is not a party to it, so in addition to the documents from the country of death, the Polish consul's certificate is needed.
The country is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention (according to the HCCH, as of 13 October 2026). If a Polish office asks for authentication of a document from this country, legalisation is needed.
Angola: a legalised death record and local permits
In Angola the embassy in Luanda asks for more documents than in most countries. The death certificate must be legalised. A local permit to take the body abroad is also needed, together with a sanitary certificate from the authorities on a suitable coffin and no public health risk, plus the starosta's permit, a medical statement that no infectious disease was involved, and a document confirming the death. We collect the legalisations and permits on your behalf.
For an urn the list is similar, with additions: a cremation certificate with the deceased's details and a funeral home certificate that the urn is sealed and holds only the ashes. The application is filed in person or by post, the visit date is agreed by email, and the consul issues the certificate no later than three days after the application. We confirm translation and apostille requirements with the mission for each document.
The Polish consul's certificate
The certificate for bringing a body or ashes to Poland is issued by the Polish Embassy in Luanda.
According to the Polish mission's website, the death document must be legalised.
On the Polish side two documents are always needed, for an urn too: the starosta's permit and the Polish consul's certificate (Article 14(4) of the Act on Cemeteries and Burial of the Dead).
Documents for the consul: body
According to the Polish mission's website, the following are needed:
- Burial permit (pozwolenie) issued by the starosta or the city mayor (application by the family or a funeral home).
- A legalised copy of the death certificate or another document confirming the death.
- Medical certificate that the cause of death was not an infectious disease.
- Permit from the local authorities for the removal of the body abroad.
- Sanitary certificate from the local authorities confirming a suitable coffin and the absence of risk.
Documents for the consul: ashes
According to the Polish mission's website, the following are needed:
- The starosta's permit (it also covers ashes) and the legalised copy of the death certificate.
- Cremation certificate with the deceased's details.
- Certificate from the funeral home that the urn is sealed and contains only the ashes of the deceased.
Frequently asked questions
Who issues the Polish consul's certificate when a body is brought from Angola?
The Polish Embassy in Luanda, on the basis of the starosta's permit and the death certificate. The law provides that the certificate is issued within 3 days of the application at the latest (Article 14(5) of the Act on Cemeteries and Burial of the Dead).
Are permits needed for an urn from Angola?
Yes. Polish rules on the conveyance of bodies apply accordingly to ashes, so the starosta's permit and the consul's certificate are needed.
