Repatriation from Libya to Poland
We organise bringing the deceased from Libya to Poland: documents from the country of death, Polish permits and transport of the body or urn.
- Issuing authority and document
- Certificate: the Polish Embassy in Tripoli, which according to gov.pl temporarily operates from Tunis. The export permit comes from the authorities of the country of death.
- Transport
- The body is carried by air as air cargo. We agree the arrival airport and the handover point in Poland with the family.
- Timing
- The starosta and the consul have up to 3 days for their documents (Article 14(5) of the Act on Cemeteries). We give the full timing once the documents from Libya are collected.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Procedure: Libya
Poland is not a party to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Conveyance of Corpses, so bringing a body from Libya always requires the Polish consul's certificate.
Documents from Libya are authenticated by legalisation if a Polish office asks for it (the country is not a party to the Hague Convention, HCCH, as of 13 October 2026).
Libya: consular matters via Tunis
In Libya the Polish embassy in Tripoli has suspended its activity and is temporarily operating from Tunis. For consular matters the page about Libya refers to the Polish Embassy in Tunis. This means documents from Libya have to be directed to another country, and we plan for that from the start. We confirm with the embassy in Tunis how it accepts cases from Libya.
The Tunis embassy's page on the certificate also lists that, besides the starosta's permit and the death certificate, a medical certificate is needed stating that the death was not related to an infectious disease, plus a certificate from the transport company that the body was sealed in a metal coffin with an absorbent layer, placed in a wooden crate. The visit is arranged by email or telephone, and documents can be sent by post. We organise assembling the documents, contact with the consulate in Tunis and transport to Poland.
The Polish consul's certificate
The certificate is issued by the consul of the mission named on gov.pl: the Polish Embassy in Tripoli, which according to gov.pl temporarily operates from Tunis.
How to get them: the starosta's permit and the consul's certificate.
