Repatriation from Benin to Poland

- Issuing authority and document
- Certificate: the Polish Embassy in Abuja. The export permit comes from the authorities of the country of death.

- Timing
- The starosta and the consul have up to 3 days for their documents (Article 14(5) of the Act on Cemeteries). We give the full timing once the documents from Benin are collected.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Procedure: Benin
Poland is not a party to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Conveyance of Corpses, so bringing a body from Benin always requires the Polish consul's certificate.
Documents from Benin are authenticated by legalisation if a Polish office asks for it (the country is not a party to the Hague Convention, HCCH, as of 13 October 2026).
Benin: the competent embassy is in Abuja
Benin is handled by the Polish Embassy in Abuja, whose district also includes Nigeria, Ghana, Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Togo. A visit to the Consular Section is arranged by email, and documents are submitted in person or by post. If the consul refuses, he issues a decision, against which a complaint can be lodged with the Minister of Foreign Affairs within 7 days, through the consul. The certificate is collected in person or sent by post.
The embassy's instructions require a funeral home certificate that the body has been secured in a soldered metal coffin with an absorbent layer at the bottom, placed in a wooden crate. For ashes, a certificate is needed that the remains are in a sealed, damage-resistant container. We prepare the funeral home certificate and the remaining documents for you, including the starosta's permit. We confirm the detailed requirements of this country's authorities on enquiry in your case.
The Polish consul's certificate
The certificate is issued by the consul of the mission named on gov.pl: the Polish Embassy in Abuja.
How to get them: the starosta's permit and the consul's certificate.
