Cremation Abroad

We arrange cremation in the country of death and bring the urn to Poland. If the family prefers, the body can also be brought home and cremated in Poland.

Two options

The first option is cremation in the country of death and transport of the urn. Each country has its own cremation rules; in Italy, for example, a written declaration of the wish to be cremated is needed, with a signature certified by a notary or an official body.

The second option is to bring the coffin to Poland and cremate the body here. The rules allow a coffin containing a body brought from abroad to be opened at the crematorium if the body is to be cremated for burial in Poland (Regulation of the Minister of Health of 7.12.2001, § 6(3), added in 2021).

How to choose

We will give you the price of each option and explain which documents are needed. In both cases a permit from the starosta (district head) and a certificate from the Polish consul are needed. The decision belongs to the family; we do not push either option.

Frequently asked questions

Is cremation abroad cheaper than bringing the body home?

It depends on the country and the city. We will give you the price of both options so that you can compare them.

Can a body brought from abroad be cremated in Poland?

Yes. Since 2021 the rules have allowed a coffin containing a body brought from abroad to be opened at the crematorium for cremation and burial in Poland.

Is a starosta's permit needed for an urn?

Yes. The rules on transporting bodies apply accordingly to ashes, so the starosta's permit and the consul's certificate are needed.
