Repatriation from Tanzania to Poland
We organise bringing the deceased from Tanzania to Poland: documents from the country of death, Polish permits and transport of the body or urn.
- Issuing authority and document
- Certificate: the Polish Embassy in Dar es Salaam. The export permit comes from the authorities of the country of death.
- Transport
- The body is carried by air as air cargo. We agree the arrival airport and the handover point in Poland with the family.
- Timing
- The starosta and the consul have up to 3 days for their documents (Article 14(5) of the Act on Cemeteries). We give the full timing once the documents from Tanzania are collected.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Procedure: Tanzania
Poland is not a party to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Conveyance of Corpses, so bringing a body from Tanzania always requires the Polish consul's certificate.
Documents from Tanzania are authenticated by legalisation if a Polish office asks for it (the country is not a party to the Hague Convention, HCCH, as of 13 October 2026).
Tanzania: deaths are registered by RITA
In Tanzania consular matters are handled by the Polish Embassy in Dar es Salaam. A visit is arranged by email with the embassy secretariat, documents can be submitted in person or by post, and the page has English and Swahili versions. In its bilateral relations menu the embassy also lists Burundi, the Comoros and Malawi. Before documents are submitted we check that copies and stamps are complete, and we inform the family of every step.
On the Tanzanian side deaths are registered by the Registration, Insolvency and Trusteeship Agency (RITA), and registration can be filed online through the eRITA portal. With the Tanzanian death certificate we move on to the Polish part: the starosta's permit, the consul's certificate and air transport. We organise the order of these steps together with the family and make sure the documents from Tanzania are complete before they are submitted at the embassy.
The Polish consul's certificate
The certificate is issued by the consul of the mission named on gov.pl: the Polish Embassy in Dar es Salaam.
How to get them: the starosta's permit and the consul's certificate.
