Repatriation from Ethiopia to Poland
We organise bringing the deceased from Ethiopia to Poland: documents from the country of death, Polish permits and transport of the body or urn.
- Issuing authority and document
- Certificate: the Polish Embassy in Addis Ababa. The export permit comes from the authorities of the country of death.
- Transport
- The body is carried by air as air cargo. We agree the arrival airport and the handover point in Poland with the family.
- Timing
- The starosta and the consul have up to 3 days for their documents (Article 14(5) of the Act on Cemeteries). We give the full timing once the documents from Ethiopia are collected.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Procedure: Ethiopia
Poland is not a party to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Conveyance of Corpses, so bringing a body from Ethiopia always requires the Polish consul's certificate.
Documents from Ethiopia are authenticated by legalisation if a Polish office asks for it (the country is not a party to the Hague Convention, HCCH, as of 13 October 2026).
Ethiopia: Addis Ababa and its neighbours
Ethiopia is served by the Polish Embassy in Addis Ababa. The same post also handles Djibouti, South Sudan, and the African Union, IGAD and the UN Economic Commission for Africa. In practice this means the case of someone who died in Ethiopia is run from the capital, and if the family is elsewhere, applications and collection are handled by correspondence.
The certificate for bringing remains or ashes home is issued by the consul. The application is filed in person or by post, the visit date is arranged by email, and the certificate should be ready promptly, no later than three days after the documents are filed. If it is refused, a complaint to the Minister of Foreign Affairs may be filed within seven days, through the consul. We confirm separately which Ethiopian authority approves the removal in your case. We organise the documents, contact with the embassy and transport to Poland.
The Polish consul's certificate
The certificate is issued by the consul of the mission named on gov.pl: the Polish Embassy in Addis Ababa.
How to get them: the starosta's permit and the consul's certificate.
