Repatriation from Madagascar to Poland

Poland is not a party to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Conveyance of Corpses, so bringing a body from Madagascar always requires the Polish consul's certificate.
Documents from Madagascar are authenticated by legalisation if a Polish office asks for it (the country is not a party to the Hague Convention, HCCH, as of 13 October 2026).
Madagascar: the documents on the Nairobi embassy's list
Madagascar is in the district of the Polish Embassy in Nairobi, which also serves Kenya, Mauritius, the Seychelles, Uganda and Somalia. A visit is arranged by email, and documents can be submitted in person or by post. If the consul refuses, he issues a decision, against which a complaint can be lodged with the Minister of Foreign Affairs within 7 days, through the consul. The certificate is collected in person or sent by post. The consul does not cover financial obligations and does not decide for the family on the method or place of burial.
The embassy's instructions list what the Madagascan authorities require: the authorities' permit for transport, a protocol of the coffin's closure, a medical certificate of the cause of death, a certificate of storage in a mortuary, and certificates that there was no infectious disease and no epidemic in the area of death. The Polish starosta's permit is added to these. We collect these documents on the spot, make sure the set is complete and organise the transport.
