Repatriation from Lesotho to Poland
We organise bringing the deceased from Lesotho to Poland: documents from the country of death, Polish permits and transport of the body or urn.
- Issuing authority and document
- Certificate: the Polish consul confirmed in your case. The export permit comes from the authorities of the country of death.
- Transport
- The body is carried by air as air cargo. We agree the arrival airport and the handover point in Poland with the family.
- Timing
- The starosta and the consul have up to 3 days for their documents (Article 14(5) of the Act on Cemeteries). We give the full timing once the documents from Lesotho are collected.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Procedure: Lesotho
Poland is not a party to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Conveyance of Corpses, so bringing a body from Lesotho always requires the Polish consul's certificate.
Documents from Lesotho are authenticated with an apostille if a Polish office asks for it (the country is a party to the Hague Convention, HCCH, as of 13 October 2026).
Lesotho: contact with the Embassy in Pretoria
We confirm the post competent for this country in your case. The website of the Polish Embassy in Pretoria lists Lesotho among the countries with which it maintains bilateral relations, together with Botswana, Eswatini, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. This embassy accepts applications for the certificate for bringing in remains.
The appointment is arranged by email with the consular section. The documents do not need to be translated into Polish. The application is filed by the person entitled to arrange the funeral or by an authorised person, for example a funeral home employee, who attaches the original power of attorney. We act precisely under such a power of attorney, so the family does not have to travel to Africa. At the end we take care of the carriage to Poland, contact with the cemetery and the date of the funeral, so that the family decides only on what matters most to it. We clarify the detailed requirements of this country's authorities on request in your case.
Deaths in Lesotho are registered by National Identity and Civil Registration, a department of the Ministry of Home Affairs, with its office in Maseru at the corner of Moshoeshoe Road and Lerotholi Road. First a doctor must issue a certificate of the cause of death. In hospital the doctor usually hands it over in a sealed envelope addressed to this office, so the family should not open it. Only then can the death be registered. The list of honorary consulates attached to the Polish Embassy in Pretoria covers Lusaka, Maputo, Durban and Harare, and has none in Lesotho. So all consular matters go through Pretoria. We arrange collecting the medical certificate from the hospital, contact with the Maseru office and passing the full set of documents on, and we keep you informed about local requirements in your case.
