Repatriation from Rwanda to Poland
We organise bringing the deceased from Rwanda to Poland: documents from the country of death, Polish permits and transport of the body or urn.
- Issuing authority and document
- Certificate: the Polish Embassy in Kigali. The export permit comes from the authorities of the country of death.
- Transport
- The body is carried by air as air cargo. We agree the arrival airport and the handover point in Poland with the family.
- Timing
- The starosta and the consul have up to 3 days for their documents (Article 14(5) of the Act on Cemeteries). We give the full timing once the documents from Rwanda are collected.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Procedure: Rwanda
Poland is not a party to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Conveyance of Corpses, so bringing a body from Rwanda always requires the Polish consul's certificate.
Documents from Rwanda are authenticated with an apostille if a Polish office asks for it (the country is a party to the Hague Convention, HCCH, as of 13 October 2026).
Rwanda: its own embassy in Kigali
Rwanda is now served by its own Polish Embassy in Kigali, established by a decision of the Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2022. Until 1 January 2025 consular functions for Rwanda were performed by the consul in Dar es Salaam, so older information may be out of date. From that date, applications for the consul's certificate go to the embassy in Kigali.
On the Rwandan side a death is registered in the national civil registration system. The service is available online through the Irembo portal, where a deceased foreigner is identified by a passport number, and the application names two witnesses and a declarant. We help the family through these steps, then file the application for the starosta's permit, obtain the consul's certificate and organise the transport. This is a new post, so we will check the embassy's current requirements.
The Polish consul's certificate
The certificate is issued by the consul of the mission named on gov.pl: the Polish Embassy in Kigali.
How to get them: the starosta's permit and the consul's certificate.
