Repatriation from Mauritania to Poland

Procedure: Mauritania
Poland is not a party to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Conveyance of Corpses, so bringing a body from Mauritania always requires the Polish consul's certificate.
Documents from Mauritania are authenticated by legalisation if a Polish office asks for it (the country is not a party to the Hague Convention, HCCH, as of 13 October 2026).
Mauritania is handled from Rabat
Mauritania is served by the Polish Embassy in Rabat, in Morocco, whose district covers Morocco and Mauritania. Address: 23 av. Oqbah. A visit is arranged with the Consular Section by phone or email. If the consul refuses, he issues a decision, against which a complaint can be lodged with the Minister of Foreign Affairs within 7 days, through the consul. The certificate is collected in person or sent by post.
According to this embassy's instructions, a body is carried only by a company specialising in international transport of human remains, while ashes may travel in a sealed, damage-resistant container by any means of transport, with respect for the remains. The carrier's rules apply to hand luggage. We combine the Mauritanian part, the Polish starosta's permit and the consul's certificate into one plan of action. We confirm the detailed requirements of this country's authorities on enquiry in your case.
The Polish consul's certificate
The certificate is issued by the consul of the mission named on gov.pl: the Polish Embassy in Rabat.
How to get them: the starosta's permit and the consul's certificate.
