Repatriation from Liberia to Poland
We organise bringing the deceased from Liberia to Poland: documents from the country of death, Polish permits and transport of the body or urn.
- Issuing authority and document
- Certificate: the Polish Embassy in Abuja. The export permit comes from the authorities of the country of death.
- Transport
- The body is carried by air as air cargo. We agree the arrival airport and the handover point in Poland with the family.
- Timing
- The starosta and the consul have up to 3 days for their documents (Article 14(5) of the Act on Cemeteries). We give the full timing once the documents from Liberia are collected.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Procedure: Liberia
Poland is not a party to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Conveyance of Corpses, so bringing a body from Liberia always requires the Polish consul's certificate.
Documents from Liberia are authenticated with an apostille if a Polish office asks for it (the country is a party to the Hague Convention, HCCH, as of 13 October 2026).
Liberia: the embassy in Abuja
Liberia comes under the Polish Embassy in Abuja, Nigeria. Its district also includes Benin, Ghana, Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, Sierra Leone and Togo. Visits are arranged by email at the Consular Section, and documents are accepted in person or by post. If the consul refuses, he issues a decision, against which a complaint can be lodged with the Minister of Foreign Affairs within 7 days, through the consul. The certificate is collected in person or sent by post.
The embassy requires a funeral home certificate that the body has been secured in a soldered metal coffin with an absorbent layer, placed in a wooden crate. For ashes, a sealed, damage-resistant container is certified. In our work we begin with the local documents confirming the death, then file the application for the starosta's permit, and finally obtain the consul's certificate and organise the transport. We confirm the detailed requirements of this country's authorities on enquiry in your case.
Diplomatic relations with Liberia were established on 30 May 1973. Poland then had a delegate in Monrovia, later upgraded to an embassy. In 1990, during the civil war, the embassy's activity was suspended and it has not been restored, so there is no Polish office in Liberia and consular matters are handled by the Polish Embassy in Abuja. Liberia uses the apostille, so a death certificate is given an apostille, without full legalisation. We collect documents in Liberia, prepare the application for Abuja and organise the flight to Poland. We confirm the Liberian authorities' requirements for the permit to take a body out of the country in your case, and the family does not need to travel to Nigeria to get things moving.
The Polish consul's certificate
