Repatriation from Côte d’Ivoire to Poland

We organise bringing the deceased from Côte d’Ivoire to Poland: documents from the country of death, Polish permits and transport of the body or urn.

Issuing authority and document
Certificate: the Polish Embassy in Dakar. The export permit comes from the authorities of the country of death.
Transport
The body is carried by air as air cargo. We agree the arrival airport and the handover point in Poland with the family.
Timing
The starosta and the consul have up to 3 days for their documents (Article 14(5) of the Act on Cemeteries). We give the full timing once the documents from Côte d’Ivoire are collected.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Procedure: Côte d’Ivoire

Poland is not a party to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Conveyance of Corpses, so bringing a body from Côte d’Ivoire always requires the Polish consul's certificate.

Documents from Côte d’Ivoire are authenticated by legalisation if a Polish office asks for it (the country is not a party to the Hague Convention, HCCH, as of 13 October 2026).

Côte d'Ivoire: the embassy in Dakar, eight countries in one district

Côte d'Ivoire is handled by the Polish Embassy in Dakar. According to its gov.pl page, the embassy's territorial jurisdiction covers eight countries: Senegal, Burkina Faso, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Cape Verde and Côte d'Ivoire. The distance to Dakar can be long, so we prepare documents in a way that lets them be filed with the embassy by post or through a representative. After a case is reported we tell the family which documents are needed as originals and which can be passed on as scans.

Remains are taken to Poland by air through an international body-transport company, and an urn follows the airline's rules. In order: a death document from the local hospital or authorities, embalming or cremation, consent for export, the flight, and on the Polish side the starosta's permit and the consul's certificate. We confirm the detailed requirements of this country's authorities on request, for your case.

The Polish embassy in Abidjan was suspended in 2003 because of an internal armed conflict, and Côte d'Ivoire is now under the Polish Embassy in Dakar. Diplomatic relations were established in 1974. On the Ivorian side, the government public-services portal lists, under Civil status, procedures for declaring a death, for requesting a death certificate by post (Poste CI) and for full copies of death records. A certificate of this kind is where collecting documents starts. The country does not use the apostille, so the death certificate is legalised. We find out which civil registry office issues the copy in your case, handle the declaration of death and the application to Dakar, and organise the flight to Poland.

The Polish consul's certificate

The certificate is issued by the consul of the mission named on gov.pl: the Polish Embassy in Dakar.

How to get them: the starosta's permit and the consul's certificate.
