Repatriation from Mozambique to Moldova

In Mozambique the paperwork is in Portuguese, and for foreign nationals an autopsy is mandatory. We explain in order what the official guidance says and what is left to confirm.

Issuing authority and document
Mozambique is not among the 24 states listed for the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (list consulted 13.10.2026), so Mozambican rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. According to UK government guidance (updated 18.02.2026), the death is registered with local authorities, often through a funeral director, and the certificate is issued in Portuguese. The list of Moldovan missions on mfa.gov.md (13.10.2026) shows no mission in Mozambique and does not name it among countries covered by another mission; we establish the competent mission at the start.
Transport
Maputo is roughly 8,100 km from Chișinău in a straight line (our own calculation from the cities' coordinates). The list of destinations of Chișinău airport (secondary source, 13.10.2026) shows no flights to Mozambique; we have not verified which connecting routes and airlines exist. The UK guidance notes that local undertakers may not always be able to provide quickly the special caskets needed for international carriage.
Timing
The only marker in the UK guidance: repatriation normally takes 8 to 10 days, depending on flights and local formalities; the guidance is written for the UK and is not a timeframe promised by us. It also notes that release of any information by the authorities can take weeks. We confirm the timeline for Moldova once we have the documents.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.

Procedure

The UK guidance (18.02.2026) says the death must be registered with local authorities; the full name, date of birth and passport number are needed. The local certificate is issued only in Portuguese, so a translation is required.

An autopsy is mandatory for foreigners who die in Mozambique and is carried out by appointed forensic doctors; doctors may remove organs for testing without the consent of next of kin. The body is normally held in a hospital morgue; temperature-controlled storage for a fee exists, according to the guidance, only in Maputo and Beira, and hospital bills must be paid before release.

Required documents

According to the guidance, the Mozambican State issues the repatriation permit, usually requested by the funeral director, and a local notary stamps it. If the deceased is in a province outside Maputo, a certificate of transfer is also needed. The local undertaker can arrange the death certificate, a certificate of embalming and a certificate permitting transfer.

In the Hague Convention status table (updated 30.06.2026) we did not find a row for Mozambique; we draw no conclusion from this. What the Moldovan side requires (mortuary passport, legalisation) we establish with the competent mission.

Specifics of Mozambique

Note: the UK guidance carries a remark that, because of COVID-19, permits for repatriating bodies were not being issued, only for ashes. It may be outdated and we could not verify the current position; we confirm it with the authorities before any commitment.

Cremation is uncommon, and the Maputo crematorium is basic, run by the Hindu community and open to all faiths. The request is made to the local civil registry and the ashes are normally collected the following day. The guidance says ashes can be taken to the UK with minimal bureaucracy; for Moldova we check separately.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the certificate from Mozambique need translating?

The UK guidance says the local death certificate is issued only in Portuguese. Who makes the translation and what legalisation Moldova asks for we establish with the competent mission before submission.

Is an autopsy mandatory for a foreign national?

Yes, according to the UK guidance (18.02.2026) an autopsy is mandatory for foreigners who die in Mozambique and is carried out by appointed forensic doctors.

Can the body be transported, or only an urn?

The UK guidance carries a remark that during COVID-19 permits were issued only for ashes. We could not verify whether it still applies; we ask the authorities and answer in writing before any commitment.

Where can cremation be done in Mozambique?

The guidance calls cremation uncommon and mentions the Maputo crematorium, run by the Hindu community and open to all. The request is made to the local civil registry, and the ashes are normally collected the following day.
