Repatriation from Malawi to Moldova

In Malawi the starting document is the district hospital's death report. We help you go through registration, the export papers and transport in order.

Issuing authority and document
Malawi is not among the 24 states listed for the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (list consulted 13.10.2026), so Malawian rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. According to UK government guidance (published 13.10.2022, no update date), the death is registered with the National Registration Bureau (NRB) on the basis of the death report issued by the district hospital where the death took place; a family member or a funeral director can register it. The list of Moldovan missions on mfa.gov.md (13.10.2026) shows no mission in Malawi and does not name it among countries covered by another mission; we establish the competent mission at the start.
Transport
Lilongwe is roughly 6,800 km from Chișinău in a straight line and Blantyre roughly 7,000 km (our own calculation from the cities' coordinates). The list of destinations of Chișinău airport (secondary source, 13.10.2026) shows no flights to Malawi; we have not verified which connecting routes exist. The UK guidance notes that some airlines also ask for a copy of the deceased's passport, and that local cremation is available in Lilongwe and Blantyre.
Timing
The UK guidance gives no timings for the death report, post-mortem, embalming or flight. We confirm the timeline once we have the documents.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.

Procedure

The guidance says registration requires the death report issued by the district hospital where the death took place. A family member or a local funeral director can register the death and collect the certificate.

A post-mortem is usually required when the cause of death is unknown, unnatural, sudden or violent, and is carried out by court-appointed forensic doctors at the pathology sections of government hospitals (for example Kamuzu Central and Queen Elizabeth Central). The guidance notes that repatriation usually requires a post-mortem.

Required documents

For repatriating a body to the UK the guidance lists: the original burial permit, the embalming certificate, a copy of the death registration or death certificate, and a certificate permitting transfer of the remains; embalming is required. The authority issuing the permit is not named. What the Moldovan side additionally requires (mortuary passport, translations) we establish with the competent mission.

Malawi is a party to the 1961 Hague Convention (accession 24.02.1967, in force 02.12.1967, per the table updated 30.06.2026), and Moldova's row lists no reservations or declarations. Which Malawian authority applies the apostille and whether the export papers need one we have not verified.

Specifics of Malawi

Cremation is possible in Lilongwe and Blantyre; the guidance asks for the next of kin's letter of instruction, the death report or certificate and, only if the death is suspicious, police clearance issued after the post-mortem.

For ashes the guidance asks for the certificate of cremation on leaving Malawi and a customs form on arrival; the airline may have its own restrictions. The guidance is written for repatriation to the UK, so we confirm the requirements for Moldova separately.
