Repatriation from Seychelles to Moldova

Seychelles is an Indian Ocean archipelago thousands of kilometres from Moldova. This page says only what we could verify in public sources and openly shows what remains to be clarified.

Issuing authority and document
Seychelles is not among the parties to the Strasbourg Agreement (1973) on the transfer of corpses (public list, checked 13.10.2026), so Seychelles rules apply together with the requirements of the Republic of Moldova. The death is declared at the Civil Status Office in Victoria and the certificate comes from the Department of Immigration and Civil Status. The mortuary passport is issued by an embassy or consulate of the Republic of Moldova; Seychelles does not appear in the list of missions on mfa.gov.md (checked 13.10.2026), so we find the competent mission before filing documents.
Transport
Victoria (Mahé island) is about 6,300 km from Chișinău (our own straight-line calculation). The destinations list of Chișinău airport (RMO) does not include Seychelles, and we have no verified source on the route, so we assume nothing: we choose the mode of transport once we know the documents, the place of death and the airline conditions.
Timing
The only public indication we found is the UK government guide for its own citizens (updated 08.01.2025): local formalities for repatriation can take seven days or more, and repatriation is not always possible. We have no verified timeline for Moldova; we discuss one only after seeing the documents.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.

Procedure

According to the UK government guide (updated 08.01.2025), the death is declared at the Civil Status Office in Victoria within 24 hours. As a rule a funeral director, a relative or a friend can do it, with the details of the person declaring and of the deceased (name, date of birth, passport number). The guide is written for British nationals, so we use it only as an indication of local practice.

The page of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova on deaths abroad (checked 13.10.2026) says that transporting a body to Moldova is possible only under the law of the country of death and the applicable international rules. What Moldova requires specifically for Seychelles we have not verified.

Required documents

The British guide names the death certificate from the Department of Immigration and Civil Status and says the passport and original documents, such as post-mortem and police reports where they exist, accompany the deceased. Other papers (medical certificate, notification of death) are described there only for the British case.

Seychelles is in the table of the 1961 Hague Convention (accession 09.06.1978, in force 31.03.1979; HCCH, checked 13.10.2026), so Seychelles documents are in principle legalised by apostille. Which authority issues it and whether the Moldovan mission accepts it for each document, we confirm before sending anything.

Specifics of Seychelles

Cremation is possible locally through a funeral director, and the British guide says ashes can usually be carried by the family (the guide speaks of travel to the UK). On leaving Seychelles you show the cremation certificate and a letter of authorisation from the Public Health Authority. The airline rules for an urn are checked separately.

The guide says a local international undertaker handles the preparation of the body. On the coffin and preparation of the body the source says little, so we do not describe requirements we have not seen as fact. We found no information on a Moldovan diaspora or an honorary consulate in Seychelles.

Frequently asked questions

How soon must a death be declared in Seychelles?

The UK government guide (08.01.2025) says within 24 hours of the death, at the Civil Status Office in Victoria. That is the rule described for British nationals; we confirm it for your case.

What is needed to take ashes out of Seychelles?

According to the same guide, the cremation certificate and a letter of authorisation from the public health authority; the guide mentions a customs form on arrival in the UK, and we have not verified Moldova. We learn the airline rules before the flight.

Is there a direct flight between Seychelles and Chișinău?

We found no source confirming one; the destinations list of Chișinău airport does not include Seychelles (checked 13.10.2026). We assume nothing until we see the actual situation.

Which Moldovan embassy handles Seychelles?

In the list on mfa.gov.md (checked 13.10.2026) Seychelles appears neither as a country with a mission nor as a country assigned to another mission. We find the competent mission before filing documents.
