Repatriation from Burundi to Moldova
We help with the Burundian and Moldovan paperwork and with air transport home. The main source on the Burundian procedure is a British guide from 2018, so we say openly what is confirmed and what we clarify case by case.
- Issuing authority and document
- Burundi is not among the 24 states listed for the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973), according to the Dutch treaty database consulted on 13.10.2026, so Burundian rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. The list of Moldovan missions abroad (mfa.gov.md, consulted 13.10.2026) shows no embassy or consulate in Africa and mentions no accreditation for Burundi, so we clarify with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs which mission issues the mortuary passport.
- Transport
- By air. In a straight line it is about 5,600 km from Bujumbura to Chișinău (our own calculation). The undated Wikipedia destination table for Chișinău airport (RMO) lists no destination in sub-Saharan Africa; we have not checked airline timetables, so a route with connections is planned for each case, depending on the departure airport and the airline.
- Timing
- We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. The 2018 British guide gives an indicative interval for local formalities, which we do not repeat because it is old; an autopsy or an investigation can also delay the release of the body.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.
Procedure
According to the British government guide for Burundi (published 10.08.2018, prepared by the British High Commission in Kigali), the death certificate is issued in French, within hours or a day, and does not always give the cause of death in detail. If the death raises no concern, registration is allowed and the body is released for repatriation within a few days.
The body is normally kept in a hospital mortuary, with a daily fee. The guide says that all hospital bills must be paid before the body is released. In accidental or suspicious deaths the police become involved, and the autopsy report is usually available within a month, but this is not always the case and delays are possible.
Required documents
The British guide lists a local death certificate, a certificate of embalming and a certificate permitting transfer of the remains for taking a body out of the country; the funeral director prepares the papers. It does not name the authority that issues the last two, so we find this out at the start through a local funeral director.
On the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs page on deaths (consulted 13.10.2026), a mortuary passport is required for the international transport of a body, and a foreign death certificate must be legalised by the authorities of the state concerned.
Specifics of Burundi
Burundi is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention (HCCH, consulted 13.10.2026), in force since 13.02.2015. The HCCH table marks objections to Burundi's accession; the Dutch treaty database (consulted 13.10.2026) names those of Austria, Czechia, Germany and Poland and does not list Moldova among them. We have not confirmed which Burundian authority places the apostille, so we check document by document.
The British guide says there are no cremation services in Burundi; the nearest country with a crematorium would be Rwanda. For an urn with ashes the procedure must be clarified separately, and we have not confirmed it from an official Burundian source.
Frequently asked questions
What language is a Burundian death certificate in?
According to the 2018 British guide, Burundian death certificates are issued in French, sometimes without details of the cause of death. We decide on the translation into Romanian once we see the document.
Must hospital bills be paid before repatriation?
The British guide says all hospital bills must be paid before the body is released. How the rule works in a particular hospital we find out through the local funeral director.
Can cremation be done in Burundi?
According to the same guide there are no cremation services in Burundi, and the nearest country with a crematorium would be Rwanda. We have not checked whether this 2018 information is still valid.
Is an apostille placed on Burundian documents?
Burundi and Moldova are both parties to the Apostille Convention, and Moldova is not among the states that objected to Burundi's accession (Dutch treaty database, 13.10.2026). We have not found the Burundian authority that places the apostille, so we do not promise this step without checking.
