Repatriation from Djibouti to Moldova

For Djibouti we did not find a public guide from any government on repatriating the deceased. So this page is short: it says only what we verified and openly says what we do not know yet.

Issuing authority and document
Djibouti is not among the parties to the Strasbourg Agreement (1973) on the transfer of corpses (public list, checked 13.10.2026), so Djiboutian rules apply together with the requirements of the Republic of Moldova. The mortuary passport is issued by an embassy or consulate of the Republic of Moldova; Djibouti does not appear in the list of missions on mfa.gov.md (checked 13.10.2026), so we find the competent mission before filing documents.
Transport
Djibouti city is about 4,160 km from Chișinău (our own straight-line calculation). The destinations list of Chișinău airport (RMO) does not include Djibouti, and we have no verified source on airports or routes in Djibouti, so we assume nothing: we plan the route once we know the documents, the place of death and the airline conditions.
Timing
How long formalities take in Djibouti we cannot say: we found no public source, so we give no estimates. The duration would depend on the Djiboutian authorities, the competent Moldovan mission and the route, and we discuss a timeline only after seeing the documents.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.

Procedure

The page of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova on deaths abroad (checked 13.10.2026) says that transporting a body to Moldova is possible only under the law of the country of death and the applicable international rules. We have no verified source on Djiboutian law, so we do not describe local steps as fact.

A search of the UK government website (13.10.2026) for Djibouti returns only travel advice and a list of funeral directors, medical facilities and translators, with no repatriation procedure. We do not copy the addresses from that list.

Required documents

We set the exact list of documents and who issues them with the Moldovan mission, not by another state's rules. The page of the Moldovan ministry says a foreign death certificate must be legalised by the authorities of that state.

Djibouti does not appear in the table of the 1961 Hague Convention (HCCH, checked 13.10.2026), so an apostille cannot be assumed; we confirm the order of legalisations for Djibouti with the mission before sending documents.

What we do not claim

We do not claim that embalming, a post-mortem or cremation is mandatory or possible in Djibouti: we have no source that says so. We do not know whether cemeteries or crematoria are open to foreigners, and we have not verified any coffin requirements.

When the choice is between an uncertain promise and saying "we do not know yet", we say the latter. Before any step the family receives from us a list of what we have verified and what we are still going to verify.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official guide on a death in Djibouti?

We found none: a search of the UK government website (13.10.2026) returns no such guide for Djibouti. So this page shows only what we could verify.

Can an apostille be used on Djiboutian documents?

Djibouti does not appear in the table of the 1961 Hague Convention (checked 13.10.2026), so we do not assume an apostille. We learn the order of legalisations from the Moldovan mission.

Which Moldovan embassy handles Djibouti?

In the list on mfa.gov.md (checked 13.10.2026) Djibouti appears neither as a country with a mission nor as a country assigned to another mission. We find the competent mission before filing documents.

Can the ashes be brought from Djibouti?

We have no source confirming that cremation is possible in Djibouti or what the authorities require for an urn, so we cannot say yes or no. We check it separately once we see the actual situation.
