Repatriation from Zimbabwe to Moldova

In Zimbabwe the paperwork depends on where the death happened: at home or in a private medical institution. We help you go through registration, the export papers and transport in order.

Issuing authority and document
Zimbabwe is not among the 24 states listed for the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (list consulted 13.10.2026), so Zimbabwean rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. According to UK government guidance (updated 15.01.2025), the death is registered at the Registrar General's Office, by relatives or by a funeral director. The list of missions on mfa.gov.md (13.10.2026) shows no Moldovan mission in Zimbabwe and does not name it among countries covered by another mission; we establish the competent mission at the start.
Transport
Harare is roughly 7,200 km from Chișinău in a straight line (our own calculation from the cities' coordinates). The list of destinations of Chișinău airport (secondary source, 13.10.2026) shows no flights to Zimbabwe; we have not verified which connecting routes exist or which airlines accept a body on them. The guidance adds that temperature-controlled mortuaries exist in most major towns but not in rural areas, which matters for getting the body to the airport.
Timing
The UK guidance says the Registrar General's Office should provide the death certificate within one working week. The office is open Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, and closed on public holidays. The guidance gives no timings for embalming, the transfer permit or the flight; we confirm the timeline once we have the documents.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.

Procedure

The UK guidance (15.01.2025) asks for a photo ID or passport of the person registering and of the deceased. If the death happened in a private medical institution, form BD12 (a medical certificate) is submitted; if the person died at home, form BD11 (the notice of death from a police officer) is submitted.

The body must be identified by the next of kin or three family members; if they are abroad, the funeral director can identify it on the basis of an affidavit and a certified copy of the deceased's photo ID. Otherwise pathologists can use fingerprints or DNA.

Required documents

For repatriating a body the UK guidance lists three documents: the death certificate from the local civil registry, a certificate of embalming and a certificate permitting transfer of the remains. Coffin requirements are not covered in the guidance. What the Moldovan side additionally requires (mortuary passport, translations, legalisation) we establish with the competent mission rather than assume.

In the Hague Convention status table (updated 30.06.2026) we did not find a row for Zimbabwe; we draw no conclusion from this and check, before submission, how a Zimbabwean document can be used in Moldova.

Specifics of Zimbabwe

The guidance notes that most major towns have temperature-controlled mortuaries, but in rural areas the body may not be preserved in good condition. Post-mortems, where needed, are carried out by court-appointed forensic doctors, and the report is available in English.

For ashes the guidance asks for the certificate of cremation on leaving Zimbabwe and a customs form on arrival; the airline may have its own rules (for example whether an urn is allowed as hand luggage). The guidance does not say where crematoria operate in Zimbabwe, so we check availability.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between forms BD11 and BD12?

According to the UK guidance, BD12 is a medical certificate, used when the death happened in a private medical institution; BD11 is the notice of death from a police officer, used when the person died at home.

How long does the death certificate take in Zimbabwe?

The guidance says the Registrar General's Office should provide it within one working week. This is a marker from the guidance, not a promise from us.

Which documents does the guidance list for moving a body?

The local death certificate, a certificate of embalming and a certificate permitting transfer of the remains. The authority that issues the transfer permit is not named in the guidance, so we establish it and confirm it in writing before submission.

Can an urn be brought from Zimbabwe?

The guidance asks for the certificate of cremation on leaving and a customs form on arrival, and the airline has its own rules. We confirm the requirements of Moldova separately, before the flight.
