Repatriation from Egypt to Moldova

Egypt is much closer to Moldova (about 1,900 km in a straight line), but the paperwork is its own: the certificate is in Arabic, Egypt does not appear in the Apostille Convention status table, and the Moldovan mission that covers Egypt is in Ankara. We help you take it in order.

Issuing authority and document
Egypt is not on the public list of parties to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973), which we consulted on 13.10.2026, so Egyptian rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. According to the British government guide for Egypt (updated 18.10.2024), the death is registered at the district health office and the authorities issue the certificate in Arabic. The funeral director liaises with the Egyptian authorities for a repatriation permit. In the list of Moldovan missions (consulted 13.10.2026) Egypt is covered by the embassy in Ankara, so the mortuary passport and the documents are agreed with it or through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Transport
By air. In a straight line it is about 1,900 km from Cairo to Chișinău (our own calculation); we have not verified whether there are direct flights, so the route and connections are planned for each case. Egyptian practice, according to the British guide, requires embalming for repatriation.
Timing
We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. In Egypt it depends on the authorities: post-mortems are carried out by the Egyptian authorities without the family's consent, and, according to the British guide, if the forensic report is not final the certificate may state the cause of death as not yet determined, which allows repatriation. The consular legalisation of the documents is a separate step that has to be completed before they are used in Moldova.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.

Procedure

The death is registered at the district health office, as a rule by the funeral director, who needs the full name, date of birth and passport number of the deceased. The certificate is in Arabic. If the forensic report is not finished, the certificate may state the cause of death as not yet determined, which, according to the British guide, allows repatriation to go ahead. Post-mortem reports are not needed for repatriation, but they are not released until the case is concluded.

Embalming is required for repatriation, according to the British government guides for Egypt, and it can affect a later post-mortem.

Required documents

Usually needed: the local death certificate, the repatriation permit of the Egyptian authorities, the embalming certificate and the passport of the deceased; the British guide adds that the local undertaker needs a permission letter from the British Embassy, which is a rule for British citizens, so for Moldova we ask what the Egyptian side requires. Egypt does not appear in the status table of the Hague Apostille Convention that we consulted on 13.10.2026. The page of the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the legalisation of documents (last update 02.02.2017) says that documents from countries not listed are recognised only after consular legalisation. We therefore plan legalisation and agree its exact chain with the Ministry.

Specifics of Egypt

Cremation is not a normal option. The British guide (2024) says cremation is permitted but there are no official facilities, with one unofficial crematorium in Alexandria that can be used only with local permission, and another British guide (2017) says it is not available or permitted. Because the sources differ, we plan on transporting the body.

The Moldovan embassy in Ankara is also accredited to Egypt. The list of missions does not show a Moldovan embassy in Cairo, so the first contacts go through Ankara.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there no apostille from Egypt?

Egypt does not appear in the status table of the Hague Apostille Convention that we consulted on 13.10.2026. The Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs says that documents from countries not on its list are recognised only after consular legalisation, so we plan that step.

Can the person be cremated in Egypt?

The sources differ. One British government guide (2024) says cremation is permitted but there are no official facilities, another (2017) says it is not available or permitted. We therefore plan on transporting the body and discuss other options with the family.

Is a post-mortem required?

Post-mortems are carried out by the Egyptian authorities without the family's consent, according to the British guide. The reports are not needed for repatriation, but they are not released until the case is concluded.

Which Moldovan mission handles Egypt?

The embassy in Ankara is also accredited to Egypt, according to the list of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs consulted on 13.10.2026. We agree the mortuary passport and the legalisation with it.
