Repatriation from Lesotho to Moldova

We help with the Lesotho and Moldovan paperwork and with transport to Moldova. From Lesotho the body first travels by road into South Africa and then by air.

Issuing authority and document
Lesotho is not among the 24 states listed for the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973), according to the list consulted on 13.10.2026, so Lesotho's rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. According to the British government guide (published 02.06.2023), a death is registered at the office of the National Identity and Civil Registry (NICR) in the district where it occurred. The list of Moldovan missions (consulted 13.10.2026) shows no mission in Lesotho or South Africa and mentions no accreditation for Lesotho; which mission issues the mortuary passport remains to be clarified with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Transport
By road, then by air. The British guide says no airlines operate repatriation services from Lesotho and the body must be taken by hearse to Oliver Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa, where a commercial airline takes it on. In a straight line it is about 8,500 km from Maseru to Chișinău (our own calculation). No direct flights to Chișinău (RMO) appear in the undated Wikipedia destination table; we have not verified the conditions for transit through South Africa.
Timing
We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. It is also affected by the border crossing into South Africa, the legalisation of documents and the flight route from Johannesburg; for repatriation to the UK the British guide requires embalming within 3 days of death, and for Moldova we confirm the requirement separately.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.

Procedure

The British guide says a death must be registered within one year, at the NICR office in the district where it occurred. For repatriation to the UK the body must be embalmed within 3 days, then placed in a hermetically sealed zinc coffin and a packing crate; for Moldova we found no separate requirement, so we confirm it with the funeral director and the airline.

The family must also provide a supporting letter consenting to cross-border transport (a requirement from the British guide).

Required documents

To take the body out, the guide says the funeral director prepares a local civil registry death certificate, a certificate of embalming and a certificate giving permission to transfer the remains. The guide does not name the issuing authority; we find it out at the start.

Lesotho is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention (HCCH, consulted 13.10.2026; no objections marked in the table), as is Moldova. We have not confirmed who places the apostille in Lesotho, and the mortuary passport is obtained, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs page (13.10.2026), from Moldovan embassies or consulates.

Specifics of Lesotho

Lesotho has no cremation facilities; the nearest are in South Africa (British guide). For ashes, the death certificate and the cremation certificate are shown when leaving Lesotho, and the airline's rules for carrying an urn are checked in advance.

The information on the procedure comes from a guide for British citizens, not from the legislation of Lesotho. We have not verified the requirements of the South African authorities for transit of a body across their territory.
