According to the British government guide (updated 10.09.2026), a death is registered with the local authorities where the person died, usually through the funeral director; later copies come from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security. The list of Moldovan missions (consulted 13.10.2026) shows no embassy or consulate in Namibia, so we clarify with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs which mission issues the mortuary passport.
Transport: By air. In a straight line it is about 7,800 km from Windhoek to Chișinău (our own calculation). We have not verified whether direct flights to Chișinău (RMO) exist, so a route with connections is planned for each case. For ashes, the British guide advises telling the airline in advance.
Timing: We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. The British guide notes that a post-mortem report can be obtained quickly, but it does not describe the transport permit or embalming, so timing depends on clarifying those steps, on the legalisation of documents and on the flight route.

Procedure

According to the British government guide (10.09.2026), the death certificate is issued on the day of registration and does not show the cause of death. A local funeral director is needed to arrange burial or cremation in Namibia.

If the cause of death is unknown, unnatural, sudden or violent, a post-mortem is carried out at a State Police mortuary; the guide says reports are available within 24-48 hours, and a formal request needs proof of identity, proof of relationship and a case number if available.

Required documents

For repatriating remains the British guide names only the death certificate and the passport of the deceased; embalming, the coffin and the permit are not described in it, so we clarify them through the Namibian undertaker.

Namibia is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention (accession 25.04.2000, in force since 30.01.2001, per the HCCH table consulted on 13.10.2026) and the table shows no objection by the Republic of Moldova, so Namibian documents are, as a rule, apostilled. The translation and the exact list for the Moldovan side are agreed in advance.
