Repatriation from Uganda to Moldova
We help with the Ugandan and Moldovan paperwork and with air transport to Moldova. Few official sources are readily available for Uganda, so we say openly what is confirmed and what we clarify case by case.
- Issuing authority and document
- Uganda is not on the list of 24 states for the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973), which we consulted on 13.10.2026, so Ugandan rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. According to the British government guide (updated 18.10.2024), a death is registered in Uganda, including online through NIRA or through a funeral director. The list of Moldovan missions (consulted 13.10.2026) shows no embassy or consulate in Uganda and mentions no accreditation for it, so we clarify with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs which mission issues the mortuary passport.
- Transport
- By air. In a straight line it is about 5,200 km from Kampala to Chișinău (our own calculation). We have not verified whether any direct flights to Chișinău (RMO) exist, so a route with connections is planned for each case, depending on the departure airport in Uganda and the airline's requirements.
- Timing
- We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. The British guide does not name the authority that issues the embalming certificate and the transfer permit, so timing also depends on clarifying those steps, on the legalisation of documents and on the flight route.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.
Procedure
According to the British government guide (updated 18.10.2024), a death is registered in Uganda: form 12, and for a hospital death form 13 as well (the certificate of cause of death). The Ugandan death certificate does not show the cause of death.
Where the cause is unclear a post-mortem is normally carried out; the guide says burial, cremation or repatriation can take place before laboratory tests are finished.
Required documents
To take remains out of the country, the British guide lists the local civil registry death certificate, a certificate of embalming and a certificate permitting transfer of the remains. It does not say who issues the last two, so we find this out at the start through the local funeral director.
Uganda does not appear in the table of the Hague Apostille Convention (HCCH, consulted 13.10.2026), so we cannot say that Ugandan documents are apostilled. We clarify the legalisation route for Moldova with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before ordering translations.
Specifics of Uganda
According to the same guide, cremation in Uganda needs a medical certificate stating the cause of death. For ashes, the cremation certificate is shown when leaving Uganda; the airline's rules for carrying an urn are checked in advance.
The information on the Ugandan procedure comes from a guide for British citizens, not from Ugandan legislation. We have not confirmed from a primary Ugandan source who issues the transfer permit.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Ugandan death certificate show the cause of death?
No. According to the British guide, the certificate does not show the cause; it appears on form 13, completed for hospital deaths. We establish in advance what additional medical documents Moldova requires.
Who issues the permit to transfer remains from Uganda?
We have not confirmed this from an official Ugandan source. The British guide only says local funeral directors prepare the documents, including the certificate permitting transfer, without naming the issuing authority. We find the authority through the local undertaker and tell the family before the application.
Can I bring the urn with ashes from Uganda?
According to the British guide, ashes can usually be carried personally, with the cremation certificate shown on departure, and the airline's rules checked in advance. For Moldova we confirm the list of documents case by case.
Is an apostille placed on Ugandan documents?
Uganda does not appear in the HCCH table we consulted on 13.10.2026. We therefore do not promise an apostille; we check with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova what legalisation Ugandan documents need.
