Repatriation from Algeria to Moldova

Algeria is about 2,400 km from Chișinău in a straight line. A short local time limit before burial matters here, and so does a new rule for documents: the apostille has been in force for Algeria since 09.07.2026. We help you take it in order.

Issuing authority and document
Algeria is not on the public list of parties to the Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses (1973), which we consulted on 13.10.2026, so Algerian rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. According to the British government guide for Algeria (published 18.06.2025, updated 16.12.2025), the death is registered at the local Town Hall, as a rule by the funeral director. Algeria does not appear in the list of Moldovan missions on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website (consulted 13.10.2026), and we found no other official source on which mission covers it. We confirm with the Ministry at the outset who issues the mortuary passport.
Transport
By air. It is about 2,400 km in a straight line from Algiers to Chișinău (our own calculation, approximate coordinates). We have not verified whether there are direct flights to Chișinău (RMO), so the route and connections are planned for each case. The British guide does not mention coffin or embalming requirements, so we ask about them separately.
Timing
We confirm the timeline once we have the documents. A local limit matters here: according to the British guide, if repatriation does not take place within 15 days, the local authorities can proceed to burial; the period can be extended once, with the approval of the public prosecutor. A post-mortem, when required, is usually carried out within a day of death. The figures come from the guide and are not our promise.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Procedure

The death is registered at the local Town Hall; the certificate is usually in Arabic or French, and translations can be done at local translation offices. For suspicious or violent deaths, deaths in public places or deaths from a transmissible disease posing a serious public health risk, the British guide says a post-mortem is carried out; for violent deaths the prosecutor decides.

For moving the body to the UK the British guide requires the death certificate issued by the Town Hall and the passport of the deceased; separately, it says the district Town Hall issues a burial certificate (it does not list it among the repatriation documents). The mortuary pass and power of attorney that the guide attributes to the British Embassy are rules for British citizens; for Moldova we ask what the Algerian side requires.

Required documents

Usually needed: the death certificate, the passport and the funeral director's documents; whether the burial certificate from the district Town Hall is needed we check with the Algerian side. Algeria appears in the status table of the Hague Apostille Convention, with entry into force on 09.07.2026 (table consulted 13.10.2026). The Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs list on the recognition of documents (last update 02.02.2017) is older and does not include Algeria; documents from countries outside that list are recognised there only after consular legalisation. We therefore confirm the current procedure for Algerian documents with the Ministry.

Specifics of Algeria

There are no cremation facilities in Algeria, according to the British guide, so we plan on transporting the body.

The British guide says that small tissue samples may be taken at post-mortem without the family's permission, and that post-mortem reports are not usually given to next of kin.

Frequently asked questions

What does the 15-day limit mean?

According to the British government guide (updated 16.12.2025), if repatriation does not take place within 15 days, the local authorities can proceed to burial; the period can be extended once, with the approval of the public prosecutor. The documents are therefore started at once.

Are documents from Algeria apostilled?

Algeria is in the status table of the Apostille Convention, in force since 09.07.2026. The Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs list (02.02.2017) is older, so we confirm the current procedure with the Ministry before sending documents.

Can cremation take place in Algeria?

There are no cremation facilities in Algeria, says the British guide. The options are local burial or transporting the body to Moldova.

Is a post-mortem compulsory?

Not in every case. The British guide links it to suspicious or violent deaths, deaths in public places or deaths from a disease posing a serious risk; for violent deaths the prosecutor decides. When it is carried out it is usually at a government hospital, normally within a day of death.
