Repatriation from Ethiopia to Moldova
In Ethiopia an autopsy is required for repatriation and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issues a letter of consent. The guidance we rely on dates from 2022, so we treat it with caution.
- Issuing authority and document
- Ethiopia is not a party to the Strasbourg Agreement (list consulted 13.10.2026), so Ethiopian rules and the requirements of the Republic of Moldova apply. UK government guidance (updated 19.07.2022, so over four years old) says burial, cremation or repatriation cannot take place without the local death certificate. On mfa.gov.md (13.10.2026) there is no Moldovan mission in Ethiopia and the country is not named among those covered by another mission; we clarify the competent mission at the start.
- Transport
- Addis Ababa is roughly 4,300 km from Chișinău in a straight line (our own calculation). No route to Addis Ababa appears in the list of destinations of Chișinău airport (secondary source, 13.10.2026); whether a connection via Istanbul or another capital exists today we have not verified. We choose the routing once the documents are seen.
- Timing
- The UK guidance (2022) says local repatriation formalities normally take a week or more and information on the cause of death comes after a few days or weeks. For Moldova we confirm the timeline once we have the documents.
- Price
- We will quote the price once we know the details.
Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.
Procedure
The death is registered with the local authorities and the funeral director obtains the death certificate; the guidance notes that certificates may be issued in a local language and the stated cause of death often lacks detail. For use abroad a non-English version needs an official translation.
The guidance states: “An autopsy will always be required if you wish to repatriate your loved one.” It is performed by the pathology sections of government hospitals in Addis Ababa, and the family usually pays. The report is obtained from the Federal Police or the Addis Ababa Police Commission.
Required documents
In the British case the chain is: written confirmation from the next of kin, a Letter of Release from the British Embassy, then a “No Objection” letter from Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued on the basis of the Letter of Release, the death certificate and the autopsy report. Special caskets for international transport are supplied by local undertakers. What this chain looks like for a citizen of the Republic of Moldova, with no mission of its own in the country, we establish with the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs rather than assume.
In the Hague Convention status table (updated 30.06.2026) we did not find a row for Ethiopia; we draw no conclusion about the apostille and, before submission, check whether Ethiopian documents can be used in Moldova and how.
Specifics of Ethiopia
According to the guidance cremation is possible only at the Hindu Mahajan in Addis Ababa and requires, among other things, the death certificate, the passport, a letter from the embassy to the Indian Embassy and the latter’s authorisation, the post-mortem report if one was done, the next of kin’s authorisation and a photograph of the deceased. The chain of letters is described for the British case.
On embalming and on taking ashes out of the country the guidance is silent; we do not assume and find out separately. Local burial is allowed for foreign nationals at Misrake Teshaye Gabriel Church in Addis Ababa, through a local funeral director.
Frequently asked questions
Why is an autopsy required for repatriation from Ethiopia?
The 2022 UK guidance says an autopsy will always be required if repatriation is wanted. Whether the same rule applies now, and for a citizen of the Republic of Moldova, we check before starting.
What is the “No Objection” letter?
The guidance describes it as permission to repatriate issued by Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the basis of the Letter of Release, the death certificate and the autopsy report. Who requests it for a Moldovan citizen we learn from the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Where can cremation be done in Ethiopia?
The guidance names one place: the Hindu Mahajan in Addis Ababa. The document requirements are described for the British case; for Moldova we confirm them separately.
How current is the guidance for Ethiopia?
The UK guidance we rely on was updated on 19.07.2022. Rules may have changed, so we confirm every step with the local funeral director and the authorities before submission.
