Repatriation from Somalia to Moldova

Somalia has a decentralised civil registry and few services for preparing a body. This page says only what we could verify in public sources and openly shows what remains to be clarified.

Issuing authority and document
Somalia is not among the parties to the Strasbourg Agreement (1973) on the transfer of corpses (public list, checked 13.10.2026), so Somali rules apply together with the requirements of the Republic of Moldova. According to the UK government guide (updated 12.11.2024), the death is registered with the local authorities, and a funeral director can handle it. The mortuary passport is issued by an embassy or consulate of the Republic of Moldova; Somalia does not appear in the list of missions on mfa.gov.md (checked 13.10.2026), so we find the competent mission before filing documents.
Transport
Mogadishu is about 5,250 km from Chișinău (our own straight-line calculation). The destinations list of Chișinău airport (RMO) does not include Somalia, and on flights the British guide says only that an international funeral director liaises with airlines. We have no verified route out of Somalia, so we assume nothing and plan it from the documents and the place of death.
Timing
The British guide says repatriation paperwork can be complicated and lengthy and that there is no set time for issuing a death certificate; certificates are issued only during official working hours, and a police investigation can delay the process further. We have no verified timeline for Moldova and promise none.
Price
We will quote the price once we know the details.

Country status under the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses: per the Council of Europe list (archived 20.05.2014) and the Netherlands treaty database; checked 11.10.2026.

Procedure

The UK government guide for Somalia (updated 12.11.2024) describes the civil registry as "limited and poorly functioning" and completely decentralised, and obtaining a certificate can be lengthy, especially outside Mogadishu. The death is reported to the local authorities, usually through a funeral director; the certificate can be in Somali, Arabic or English. The guide is written for British nationals, so we use it only as an indication of local practice.

The page of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova on deaths abroad (checked 13.10.2026) says that transporting a body to Moldova is possible only under the law of the country of death and the applicable international rules. What Moldova requires specifically for Somalia we have not verified.

Required documents

The British guide gives no concrete list of documents for taking a body out of Somalia; it only says the paperwork is complicated. We set the list for Moldova with the competent mission, not by another state's rules, and, according to the page of the Moldovan ministry, a foreign death certificate must be legalised by the authorities of that state.

Somalia does not appear in the table of the 1961 Hague Convention (HCCH, checked 13.10.2026), so an apostille cannot be assumed; we confirm the order of legalisations with the mission before sending documents.

Specifics of Somalia

The guide says services for preparing a body for transfer are generally only available in Mogadishu, and most mortuaries are basic. There are no Somali laws on the size or material of a coffin; funeral directors can source caskets suitable for air travel. Cremation is not available in Somalia, so ashes cannot be treated as a local option; for burial, a funeral director can obtain the permit.

The guide does not mention Somaliland or Puntland and describes no regional differences, so we have no source for those regions. We found no information on a Moldovan diaspora or an honorary consulate in Somalia.

Frequently asked questions

Can cremation be done in Somalia?

The British guide (12.11.2024) says cremation is not available in Somalia, while foreign nationals can be buried. So, according to this source, an urn cannot be prepared there.

Where can a body be prepared for transport?

According to the same guide, preparation services are generally available only in Mogadishu. If the death occurred elsewhere, we set the route and preparation in the actual case.

How long does a Somali death certificate take?

The guide says there is no set time and certificates are issued only in official hours; it can be long, especially outside the capital. We give no timeline for your case.

Which Moldovan embassy handles Somalia?

In the list on mfa.gov.md (checked 13.10.2026) Somalia appears neither as a country with a mission nor as a country assigned to another mission. We find the competent mission before filing documents.
